This is a wire screen license pad. Common screen door screen is soldered to tubular shaped sheet steel edging. Numerals and logo are stamped steel with tabs located at the top and bottom. When mounted in front of cars' radiator, the screen allowed cooling air to flow through it.

The pad for this license plate consists of two pieces of cow hide sewn together. The front piece has die cut aluminum house numbers fastened to it with nails. The points of the nails are concealed indicating that the rear half was sewn on after the numerals were attached. The CAL logo was never attached possibly because this is a homemade plate and a logo was not available.

Perforated steel sheet with 5/16 inch diameter holes that allow air to flow through it. Numbers and logo are attached by means of tabs fitted to round holes in pad. At one time the numerals were red however, the entire license plate has been painted flat black.
