Organized in 1972, the Hartford Chorale comprises a chorus of 150 men and women selected annually through competitive audition from throughout the states of Connecticut and Massachusetts. The Chorale performs a demanding repertoire of choral classics - large and small - in a variety of locations throughout Greater Hartford (most frequently at the Bushnell), oftentimes accompanied by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

The original New England Fiddle Contest -- which brought as many as 50,000 spectators to Bushnell Park during the 70's -- was eventually run out of town by the Hartford "politicos", who imposed excessive crowd control regulations requiring expensive coverage by off-duty police officers at overtime wages. The non-profit music organization had to foot these costs, despite the fact that the concerts were free. Thankfully for all those who sadly witnessed the demise of this wonderful family event, the Peace Train Foundation has announced a comeback in Hartford on Sat., June 5, 1999, at Bushnell Park in Hartford. "CT Around Town" encourages anyone interested in contributing to this project to call the Peace Train Foundation at (860) 519-4688 or (860) 983-7332. Tunes.Com is a tremendous music resource, featuring a fully catalogued database (about 1 million songs) of American music from Classical, to Jazz, to Rock. For many of the most popular releases, Tunes.Com offers 30-second audio excerpts from the CDs for you to evaluate. Searches can be performed according to artist, album or song title. The audio excerpts require that you have the RealAudio plug-in from Progressive Networks installed in your browser's Plug-ins folder. You can obtain the plug-in here. CD Universe of Wallingford, CT, offers a similar service featuring audio excerpts, though the server bogged down on numerous occasions while downloading the audio tracks. |
