How much is a particular bike worth?
Message:
The value of a bicycle can only be determined by the sum of the value of its parts.
Message:
We all want to buy low sell high. The true value of a bike is what you believe it is worth. You know how much you like the bike and know what you are willing to sell for. Any less and you will pass. Value changes with demand but a good way to price your bike is to try to replace it before you sell it and see what the market is asking. Always negotiate but be realistic. Like the three rules of valuing real estate, with bikes it is Condition - Condition - ConditionWheelman1Ray

Wheelman: You forgot to mention the most important thing: CONDITION.

If you are buying a bike for potential resale, there are certain factors which you must keep in mind. If you want a bike because you had one (or yearned for one)when you were a kid, you look at it using different criteria.

When asking about the value of a bike, try to provide a lot of details: Tire size (two dimensions, written right on the tire), paint condition, rust, features (springer? built in tank? horn? lights? racks?), seat condition, chrome condition, original paint, etc.

I have an aluminum bicycle frame which is apparently quite old. It has two top tubes (the upper curved, the lower straight)The bottom bracket and headset pieces are oversized, as is the joint at the top of the seat tube. The forks and stays are cast aluminum, the tubing is all aluminum, and the tubes are possibly glued into the lugs.Someone I know claims to have seen this bicycle on some program, and it was dated to be from about 1915.It is probably American, I am told, but was found in southern central Manitoba, Canada. The front plate is gone.Anyone have any info? It would be greatly appreciated.

If the bike stands out, it probably is collectible. If you don't know anything about bikes, but see a bike and think 'man, that looks odd', then other people probably think the same way, and that increases the bike's value. Also, you've got to like the bike, too. (and if you are new at this, make sure it is cheap!)

I've got a Rollfast boys stingray lookalike that i have restored, everything on it is original except for the sissie bar, fenders, tires, chanigard(missing) and rear wheel. The lime green paint and green sparkle seat on this bike are great, but the sprocket and handlebars have some scratches. I am unsure of the year, but it is from the 60's or 70's and i would also like to know if there is any information that i can get on Rollfast. I also have another Rollfast boys bike, but it hasn't been restored yet. It is purple, needs a rear wheel, handlebars, sissie bar tires, chain, fenders and the seat and grips are not original. I would also like to know if a standard bent springer fork will fit these. Please if you could help me I would be extremely greatful.

I have a Raleigh touring bike, more commonly known as a "bobby bike" because it was used by the police. It is about 30 years old. It is in good condition, except for a flat tire at the moment. How much is it worth?
Message:
If the Raleigh has 28 inch wheels and rod brakes and is in good condition, it's probably worth $200-400 if you find the right buyer. If it has 26 inch wheels, cable brakes, and a partial chain guard, then you are looking at $10-125 depending on condition. These bikes require a special buyer, so advertise widely (like on the Menotomy web site).

RE: 1955 Schwinn Breeze -- There are three Schwinn models from the 1950's that are worth big money in the proper condition -- the Panther, the Jaguar, and the Phantom. The Phantom is the most valuable of the bunch and can be worth $2000-3000 in perfect unrestored original shape. All other Schwinns (and other makes) are worth substantially less. If it is a girls' frame bike, then the value drops dramatically simply because there are more men involved in the bicycle restoration hobby at this time. Also, boys were harder on their bikes than girls', so fewer boys models survived in good shape. A 1955 Schwinn Breeze that has been repainted, in a girls' frame, and doesn't have the original tires is probably worth $200-300 max.

It seems that many people are curious as to whether the bikes they have are worth some serious money. I'll take a shot at explaining what I have seen at bike shows. Pre-1930 -- All of these bikes are valuable and collectable. A basket case will get around $200 and a restorable complete bike from $350 to well over $1000. Nice unrestored originals get into the $1000's with Indians bringing top dollar. 1930-WW2 -- These are not as collectable as people think. If they have a tank, lights, or a theme like "Harley Davidson" or "Hopalong Cassidy", then they are possibly worth over $1000. WW2-1960 -- This is the grand balloon tire era. Bikes made by Schwinn and bikes with horn tanks, lights, springer front suspensions, boys frames and other extras are worth good money. The completeness of the bike has a tremendous impact on the value. A bike missing its original headlight may be worth hundreds less than a complete bike in worse shape. Bikes made originally without tanks, lights, and girl's bikes are worth quite a bit less. In many cases, it's the difference between a few thousand and a few hundred dollars in value! 1960-present -- This era really hasn't taken off in value yet with the exception of the Schwinn Krate bikes. There is a cult-like following for Krates that has driven the price sky high. This has dragged the general "banana seat bikes" up in value as well. Another expection in this era is the road or track bike with full vintage Campy Record equipment. Most of these need to be Italian bikes to be worth serious money. All other 1960-present bikes are not worth much to collectors. Fancy middleweights, like the Sears Spaceliner, are potentially valuable and should be saved for the future. This has been a high-level generalization on bike value. Of course, there are exceptions in each category.

Okay, I've posted lots on the English Roadster page, but I've never asked this question...what sort of value does my 1962 Dawes 4-speed have? While I suspect it is of greater intrinsic value to me than it would be to a collector, here goes the description: black 23-in frame, really fancy lugwork, braze-ons for headlamp bracket, pump-pegs double as brake cable stops under top tube, about 85-90% finish. Sturmey Archer FW hub (works great!), Milremo alloy front hub, rims are steel, badly rusted, marked E(indecipherable)ones, made in UK, and 27 x 1 1/4. Brakes are alloy Weinmann Junior sidepulls, complete with rubber boots that fit over the cables between brake arms - boots are marked Dawes patent. Brooks B-66 saddle, worn, battered but quite comfy and useable. Pedals are steel rattraps, missing left dustcap, lots of rust but serviceable. I have the fenders that were on the bike when I got it, but they look like Wald replacements. Currently, have fitted chromed fenders from an old Hercules (I think), but those are easily replaced.
Other question: I hope that Peugeot PX-10Es from the early 70s are still overlooked by collectors. Is this accurate? It's the one model I always wanted as a kid, and if anyone has one in restoreable condition, cheap, please let me know! I need 55-60 cm frame and would prefer white.
Thanks!

It's hard to put a value on the old English bikes, especially ones that are not completely original. But then all it takes is one buyer. Menotomy just sold a 1947 Humber that was complete and in very good shape. The list was $369, but I don't know what he got for it. I would use that as an upper end and $50 as a lower end. I know that's a vast area between $50 and $380, but that's the best I can do without seeling the bike. As for the Peugeot PX-10, there were a few for sale at the Lars Anderson Bike Show in Brookline, MA on Aug 24th. One very nice original white one was only $200. Keep and eye out and you will find one eventually. Be advised, however, that they were state-of-the-art in the late 60's/very early 70's. You can collect them, but they ride and shift harshly compared to today's road bikes. Technology has passed them by bigtime.

David, there is a similar repro for sale on the Schwinn collector page for $1000.00. The man selling it says it is really decked out and in excellent condition. I myself know nothing about reproduction bike values but thought this may help some. Check out that site it is really got a lot of info.

I have an early Remington bike with wooden rims. Serial #26152. Last pat. date is 1894. I sent info to National Bicycle Historical Assn of America and have never heard back. Do they still exist? Where else can I get information? I will sell it, but want to know what I have first.

I have a women's Raleigh, bought around 1970 or shortly thereafter, and am wondering how much it's worth. It's a three-speed, red (with some chipped spots on the paint job), with a padded saddle in good condition. The speed selector says "Sturmey Archer"--not sure if that's a bike model name or just something associated with that particular part! I looked for a serial number on the bike but couldn't find one--any idea where it might be? Anyway, the bike got ridden a lot for a couple of years, then sat in storage for about 20 years, and then had a rather successful, attention-attracting season looping around city streets in the summer of 1991. I would appreciate any informed guesses at to its value. (Feel free to email me directly as well as posting to the discussion group.)

I recently came accross a bike which has two top tubes (camelback style), skip tooth sproket set up and a two speed/ coaster brake rear hub. The badge reads Hiawatha, but I'm not sure if that is an actual bike company or rather just a make. Can anyone help me out with a little bit of history here I'm having trouble finding anything.

I have a 26" girls bike with a metal plate on handle bar support that says " ROSS ". On the chain guard it has " Deluxe ". appears to be original paint and needs cleaning up. It has two small round reflectors on front of the housing one of which is broken. I haven't been able to find anything as to its age or possible value. I think it is a 1950's model. Can anyone help with info? Thanks.
Message:
"Hiawatha" was a brand name for a bicycle built by Cleveland Welding Company in the 1950's. See if your looks like this one: http://boulder.earthnet.net:80/~keithm/
Message:
I just noticed you said it has a skip tooth chain. That indicated that it is probably pre-WWII (1935-41). Didn't they stop making skip tooth chains after WWII?
Message:
Hiawatha was defintely NOT a name either owned or solely manufactured by Cleveland Welding Company. It WAS a name and line of bicycles manufactured by SEVERAL companies for Mr. Bert Gamble and sold via any of the many stores he owned. SOME Hiaweathas were made by Cleveland Welding...SOME, not all. NBHAA has much of the Hiawatha original literature. In fact, there were even English-built lightweight Hiawathas in addition to the several American-built Hiawathas. In the 1930s, the most famous of the Hiawathas was The Hiawatha Arrow- and THIS was built by Shelby Cycle Co.
Message:
So-called "skip-tooth" chains were definitely STILL in use well after WW2. It is a popular collector's myth that theses chains stopped after WW2. For instance, all early Schwinn Panthers used them. There were even a few 10-speeds into the 1970s that had inch-pitch chain. This type of chain is not at all a good indicator of age.

I have a schwinn stingray fastback that is completly original and is yellow, the seat, tires, decals, chrome, reflectors, brake pads, calipers are in excellent shape. The paint is very good but has a few scratches where the 5 spd stik shift slid on top tube. Everything works perfect and I am riding it. I think it is a 1971, the serial number is HG050363. Could anyone tell me the approximate value of this bike, I found it at a yard sale and it is really cool. Any information would be appreciated thank you.

WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!! A lot of bikes are best left UNRESTORED!! And if you've
never done a restoration then by all means WAIT!! You might end up costing yourself a
lot of money and ruining the bike!! Start by restoring and old middleweight. They are cheap and easy to find.

What are these bikes worth. The Raleigh is in very rough condition. I plan to clean it up and get it working smoothly. Needs paint. Girls with front and rear light and generator. 3-spd Sturmey-Archer Dyno hub. Brooks saddle is in good condition. Closed chaingaurd in rusted. Decal on bottom tube present. Nice badge on head tube.
The Collegiate is an external 5-spd in excellent looking and running conditon. I often ride it to work. No rust, decals good. I give it an 8.
The Hollywood is 24" white and pink. Painted rims (with rust) and fenders. Needs paint, runs well.
I would appreciate any opinions of the value of these bikes.

A local shop has a '64 Sears Spaceliner
for $350.
Overall, the bike is in excellent original shape, a couple of spots on the tank have been touched up with what looks like model paint but from 6' away you can't see it. A battery wire has also been broken but I belive I can easily fix it by re-soldering it.
Everything else (especially the chrome) is near perfect. The kids who run the sales floor don't know anything about it
(It belongs to the shop owner who's never around.) so I'm presuming it dosen't have the 2 speed rear.
Is this a good price for this bike? I want it so bad I can taste it! :)
Message:
Whether a price of $350 for the bike is a good price or not is a difficult question to answer. A bike is worth exactly what one person will pay for it. All the shop needs is one buyer to put down $350 and they are all set. Personally, I have never seen a Spaceliner go for that much money, but then again I have never seen one in that nice a shape. The shop is clearly searching for a buyer who absolutely must have a Spaceliner in the best condition possible. Are you that person?
Message:
The fact that you've seen them before is what I'm curious about. If they show up 'all the time' for only @ $100. I'd like to know. (I'm new to the hobby and havn't been to any shows.)
A web page for a Bicycle museum has their Spaceliner featured this month. They point out it took them 2 months to find an >acceptable< one. Just how lucky have I gotten? (IF I can raise the money in time!!!)
Message:
Offer him/her $300. Even 350 isn't too bad.
I've seen girl's spaceliner tanks (with horn and light, but no lense) go for $100
at shows. If it is a boy's model, even $350 is good.
Message:
The only JD's I've seen have been 3-speeds
built in the 1970s and they aren't worth much more than $175
