What is Tibetan For Windows?

Now it's possible to use Tibetan in the popular Microsoft Windows environment at a very reasonable cost! Tibetan For Windows supplies both the Tibetan font and a keyboard driver to make entering and editing Tibetan easy. You see Tibetan script on the screen as you type using your choice of keyboard input modes (Wylie, phonetic, Tibetan typewriter or user defined). Tibetan text can easily be cut and pasted between different Windows programs.

You can exchange Tibetan files to and from your PC to any Macintosh computer equipped with the Robillard LTibetan font, so both computers can work on the same project. Printing can be done on any of the graphics printers supported by Windows, including dot matrix, laser and ink jet. A free utility program is also included. The Tibetan File Converter runs under either DOS or Windows and converts between any combination of Wylie, ACIP and the Robillard font. Phonetic transliteration can also be generated as output from any of the above formats.

Technical Information

Tibetan for Windows requires Microsoft Windows (3.x or '95). An AT class or faster computer is needed to support the font display. An EGA or higher resolution graphics monitor is recommended. The DOS version of the Tibetan File Converter will run on any IBM compatible PC.

The Tibetan font is based on the Macintosh Robillard LTibetan font, and comes in both PostScript and TrueType formats. The Postscript version requires Adobe Type Manager for Windows. The keyboard driver works with the Write editor (included free with Windows 3.x), with Word 6.0 for Windows and with WordPerfect for Windows (version 5.2 and up).

Routines such as Wylie translation are contained in a documented Dynamic Link Library (DLL) which programmers can use in other applications without royalty. The Tibetan File Converter can take any Tibetan text file in ASCII format as input (however, some Sanskrit stacks may not be completely translated).

Please note that the current Windows 95 version is functionally the same as the previously released Windows 3.1 version. Separate floppies for Win95 and Win3.1 are provided because the installation program is different for the two versions of Windows.

An Independent Review
The following is from the Asian Classics Input Project (ACIP) review of Tibetan language computer software:

"Just before this documentation for Release Three went to press, ACIP received a review copy of Tibetan for Windows, which is an effort to move Tibetan on the Macintosh, along with all its associated utilities, to the Windows system for IBM-compatible computers. ... ACIP has run some preliminary test on the program and found it to be quite exciting. Input is easy, and the print-out attractive, especially with interspersed Roman and Tibetan. We believe there is great promise for this program and hope to review it more carefully in the next release, once we have put it through its paces. ..."
