Shaft was Emanuel Gerard's fifth feature film released in 1971. Directed by Gordon Parks and starring Richard Roundtree, this was one of the most popular and influential films of the "blaxploitation" genre. John Shaft was the blackest and coolest private dick (and probably the first!) to ever hit the big screen. Isaac Hayes won an Academy Award for best song for the Theme from Shaft. Shot on location in New York City, the film made use of the wonderful urban flavor of the time. From Greenwich Village and Times Square to Harlem and Welfare Island (now the upscale Roosevelt Island), Shaft offered an historical view of New York in the early seventies. These photos not only document Emanuel Gerard's set designs, but offer a rare glimpse into the making of the film as well.
