It is rare to find a depot such as Coyle. This tiny town somehow managed to save its depot which has stood almost as long as a closed agency as it did as an open agency. This portion of the Stillwater District was abandoned on May 17, 1957 following extensive flooding of the area. Once the Stillwater district passed over the Cimarron river at Ripley it followed the south bank and therefore was prone to being washed out. It is hard to imagine why this railroad was built so close to the banks of the river. Surely those who constructed it knew of the danger of washouts. Some of the right of way is visible when you pass over the Cimarron while traveling on I-35. The right-of-way appears as a break in the trees. The towns that the Santa Fe founded along this river route are basically ghost towns today. Towns such as Cottingham, Goodnight, Pleasant Valley, and Russell have seen their glory years come and go. Only Ripley, Perkins, and Coyle have a popluation of any size today.
