OKLAHOMA DIVISION FIRST DISTRICT

This line segment was the passenger main through Oklahoma that served Oklahoma City. Other than the Oil Flyer and the Tulsan all of the before mentioned Oklahoma Eastern Lines crack passenger trains operated on this district. The Texas Chief could be called Oklahoma's Super Chief. This streamliner ran from Chicago to Galveston with minimal stops and survived until 1979 as an Amtrak train: The Lone Star. For a time however the Santa Fe had allowed Amtrak to use the Texas Chief name. The Santa Fe was not satisfied with Amtrak's operation of the ex-Santa Fe Texas Chief and in the mid 70's the Santa Fe forced Amtrak to remove the Santa Fe's "Chief" name. Today it is a freight mainline for the BNSF from central Kansas to Houston and it is second only in traffic to the BNSF mainline through Woodward in the North West portion of the state. The topography of this route can best be described as transitional. West of this district the territory is basically flat plains and wheat farmland. East of this branch is the beginning of a sparse "forest" of scrubby blackjack oak and cedar which gets more dense as you travel east in Oklahoma. It is pretty land. The rolling Osage Hills lie east of Newkirk. Just North of Guthrie the line crosses Skelton Creek and the Cimarron River in a plush valley of meadows, grass, and trees. South of Noble, Oklahoma the line crosses and then follows the South Canadian river to Purcell inside a narrow portion of the South Canadian River valley. The further south you go the fewer blackjack oaks and cedars you will see.
