Newton was a very important passegner stop as you can tell from the passenger schedule. Other views of this depot can be foun in Wheat Lines and Super Ffeights on page 58. This photo shows a dirty tired red and silver F unit idling by the depot in the late 1960's. A neon Santa Fe mission cross which is only have on beams through the steamy night hours as people stand gawking at who knows what. It is a classic scene that words can not begin to describe. The platform covers have been moved to a park and now shade a prairie steamer sidelined in the park forever.

Today this depot is both a railroad station and a shopping mall. The mall fills the little extra space in the depot left by the loss of all but one passenger train. Amtrak' Southwest Chief only stops in Newton only twice a day. Both stops occur early in the moning. This leaves the depot empty during the daylight hours. While in Newton you wish that Amtrak would run just a couple more trains daily.

Newton is home to a large yard. As is shown this 1992 photograph, wheat is king in Newton.

This photo also shot in 1992 shows the locomotive service area just west of the depot. This area beggs to be modeled.
