Passenger trains have not stopped in Florence since 1971 when the unnamed Nos. 23 and 24, the former Grand Canyon, ran its last mile. The depot is closed and in poor shape. Not even Maintenance of Way personnel use the depot anymore. This usually means the end of the line for a depot that is still on Santa Fe property owned by the railroad. Florence itself was the junction point for the Marion and McPherson Railroad which was eventually absorbed into the Santa Fe.

If you arrive in Florence one day and find this depot missing it will be understood. The depot is in poor shape. One would hope however that it can be saved as it is an example of an earlier Santa Fe style brick depot built between 1900 and 1910. Similar structures still exist in Garden City, KS, Sterling, KS, and Lamar Colorado. The community does have an active historical group. Lets just hope that they save the depot as they have saved the structure shown below.

This is the Florence Harvey House. It is located several blocks from the depot. Today it is a Harvey House museum with original artifacts from the Harvey era. It is still possible by appointment to get a hot meal here served in the Harvey style. It is open by appointment. As of 1996 the phone number was (316) 878-4474. Call for an appointment.
