name of Woodson.

In the vestry records of New Kent Co. is the following item:
1772 Oct: To M- William Tyree for keeping and maintaining Richard Curle,
Orphan of Richard Curle deceased. He is to keep him from being any
charge to the Parish in future.
Wonder what would have happened if William gave Richard Curle his name?
Would he have become Richard C. Tyree??? Would this mean it was ok to
have two Richards in the same family born within three years of each
other? Would this mean I'm not a Tyree after all???
Just random thoughts at this point.

I once wrote to all the tyrees in Lynchburg and asked for any information
that they had on the family.
At least two of the 47 wrote back and sent information on their families
which had no contact with my family. I will be glad to forward any of the

Comment on this message. I lived in Lynchburg for two years and carried
papers on an unmarked street that I found was named "Tyree" street. I have
since gone back and taken a picture of the street marking. I can agree that
there were many Tyree's in Lynchburg but I was too young to worry if they
were related.

This is the story that might interest Preston Tyree. I have simply pieced it
together from readings and have no documenting proofs.
It began in 1727 when Samuel Curle rented the Parish Glebe in Blissland
Parish, New Kent County for 400 pounds of tobacco for one year. He was
allowed to keep needy parishioners there. In the year 1742 (at least) he was
forgiven the rent (?for his services); however his own family members
provided many "needy". Richard Curle had an infirmity; and Blissland Parish
had to subsidize him for years. Jemima Curle, the widow of Jeremiah Curle,
was allowed to receive pay for cleaning the Church; she was eventually given
the title of Sextoness. But Jemima had a son, William, who had to be "kept"
and "dressed"; in 1758 Jemima's daughter, Rebecca, was kept, under Church
sponsorship, by her Uncle Richard. In 1767 a coffin was provided by the
Church for Jemima Curle's child (?William). In 1771 a donation was taken up
for Jemima Curle (?as Sextoness). In 1780 Ann Curle, the daughter of the
widow Susannah, was maintained by Samuel Curle, the male head of the
household where Jemima held court.
During these struggles, Nov. 29, 1773, William Tyree was paid to keep and
maintain Richard Curle, the orphan of Richard Curle deceased; later this
became a permanent placement (?did Richard Curle take the name of Tyree).
