Where did the FENTON name come from?
(asked by Ty Tyree - Thomas FENTON Tyree)

Rachel Ann Brown (Andy's mother told me she was one of the Browns of Abbs Valley -- a famed pioneer family remembered for its Indian contestings): She married Elihu Carter and they moved to the Ohio Territory. She had two small sons, the second named Elihu FENTON Carter. Then the father died. As was the custom -- within months Rachel Ann Brown Carter had married again -- this time to her minister, John Quincy Adams Houston. This new family added three daughters and one son -- one of the daughters was Andy's grandmother, Mary Juana Houston.

Mary Juanas generation fought the Civil War. Her half brother, Elihu FENTON, was killed in the fighting. The man she married, Dr. Woodson Andrew Tyree, was badly wounded in the fighting and released from a prisoner-of-war camp at the end of the war. So Mary Juana was moved to name her first son, William FENTON Tyree -- William for her husband's father and FENTON for her killed brother.

I named my 2nd son, Robert FENTON Tyree -- the FENTON for Andy's father.

Signed,
Elinor Tyree
