The Ring

The following is a former winner of the Amazing but Incredibly True Story Contest.

I cried like a baby when my Aunt told me this story, and had to share it with the world. My aunt and uncle were married 45 wonderful years and had four children they loved dearly. One night my Aunt Marge came home and shared with my Uncle Wes the details of the most beautiful ring guard that she'd ever seen.

"Buy it my dear," was his reply. She said,"Oh no, I couldn't!  It costs too much."

"My dear, I said buy it.  You're worth every cent." His eyes twinkled. She smiled and said no.

Days passed by busy with the details of life, and she didn't give it another thought. The kids got together and came home for dinner one weekend, so she fixed the favorites. I remember Wes always bragging about how he loved how Marge cared for the children so well, even though they weren't living at home any longer. They  were still their babies and always would be as far as mama and papa were concerned. Dinner unfolded with noisy conversations as the kids  bantered back and forth. Bedtime came and the kids were all in their beds, so mama and papa quietly slipped into each other's arms and kissed good night. The following morning was stormy. Wes had often reminisced about his days in the Navy during weather like this.

Marge awakened first so she got up to fix coffee and get the fireplace going so it wouldn't be so cold when Wes got up. She waited and waited and finally went to wake him up, but he was gone. He had fallen asleep for the last time and her heart sank as she dropped to her knees with tears streaming down her face. Now what would she do without him at her side? April was uncharacteristically cool that year, but somehow it seemed even colder inside her home now.

Just when she thought she was beginning to heal, there came a knock upon her door one Sunday morning, Mother's Day. A neatly dressed man  greeted her with a smile and told her he had a gift for her. She then  recognized him as the jeweler in town. "Come in, come in and have some coffee Tom," she said. She was glad to have some company as the kids  were away until later in the day and she was feeling a bit tearful. Wes used to take her to the parade and Mother's Day breakfast every year, and this year would just not be the same.

As she sat and chatted, Tom handed her a box. She opened the nicely wrapped gift and couldn't believe her eyes. It was a beautiful ring guard, just like the  one she had described. Tom told her, "Wes bought this for you a long time  ago and I didn't know how to give it to you. I'm sorry Marge."

Marge cried with tears of joy and sadness. It was as though Wes was right there with her once again. This was the most precious gift she'd ever received, and she wore it proudly as she relayed the story to family and  friends. Strangers cried when she passed this story along. Heaven  opened up and an angel came in to complete the message of a lifelong  promise of undying love sent down from above. Their love carries on even to this day as my cousins live their lives sharing this same tender devotion with everyone they love.
