I had just picked my son up from school and was headed home on a major highway when he began to scream at the top of his lungs. The first thing he bellowed was "Auntie's tummy hurts!" He then continued to scream while grasping at his midsection desperately. His screams were such that I nearly had an accident and found it very difficult to keep calm until I could exit the interstate.
He was flailing with his right hand at the window, grimacing in pain and screeching at the same time. His body was going through contortions as he tried to escape his car seat. He carried on until he managed to cause himself to hyperventilate. At this point I was a nervous wreck because even though he had said "Auntie's tummy hurts" he had also said his hurt. He was obviously inpain and I could offer no relief. As I pulled into my driveway I had to pry him out of the car and rush into the house. I had to get my insurance card if he needed to be rushed to the hospital!
Then he began to look confused and though he was still whimpering, it was only more aboutAuntie. I told him, "We'll call Auntie and you'll see everything is just fine!" He insisted it was not. I phoned her house and her mother answered. When I asked to have her put Heather on the phone, Dean's granny promptly replied that she was not there. She had been suffering horrible stomach pains and had gone to the emergency room! As it turned out, she was very ill with an obnoxious kidney infection. Dean, who wasnot quite three years old at the time, would not calm down until his Auntie pulled up in our driveway that evening and he saw that she was better.
I have had several of these experiences with Dean. He is now nearly four years old. He has told us about various ailments his auntie has had, from back pains to knee sprains! Most recently we were home and he commented "Aunties is hot and sweaty! She needs an air conditioner like we have. She doesn't have one and she's very hot now." His Auntie, Heather, lives in Vermont. It had been very cool but the same day he made this comment they had a record heat wave. Iwas speaking to her on the phone (after Dean's comment) and I happened to ask her about the weather. She said it had been so hot she thought she'd die! She said she desperately wished they had air conditioning!
I now accept his "clairvoyance" as something normal. It comes in handy at times, like when he tells me my tire is going to "pop" or "break" or a check is going to "bounce." Where on earth does a 3 1\2 year old learn about bouncing checks? I had not bounced any in over two years and had no fear of any short funds. In addition, I know the subject had not been discussed at home. When he made that comment , I did stop at the bank, and much to my suprise I had mis-calculated on my account and hadto put some more money in to prevent "bouncing any checks".
