LECTURES TO MY STUDENTS consists of many outstanding addresses by the great C. H. Spurgeon, delivered to the students of "The Pastors' College," which he founded in 1856. "The preacher's inner life as well as his public ministry" was the subject of these addresses.  Elocution and gesticulation were the theme of several, while the volume on THE ART OF ILLUSTRATIONS (abundantly illustrated) is perhaps the most comprehensive work still available today.

C. H. Spurgeon was one of the "pioneers" of the Bible College concept, and it seems D. L. Moody adopted the basic pattern of Spurgeon's Pastors' College for the Moody Bible Institute. In this book, Spurgeon's lectures on the theme of "ministry" reveal the nature of the training used at the Pastors' College. Mrs. C. H. Spurgeon inaugurated her Book Fund by distributing free copies to needy pastors.

Originally there were 3 Volumes in the "series." In addition to the first two books which contained 23 Lectures, Spurgeon prepared a third book, COMMENTING AND COMMENTARIES, being 2 lectures on Commenting, along with a Catalogue of Commentaries (with his opinions and preferences). A fourth book Spurgeon had long carefully gathered the materials for was The Art of Illustration, consisting of 7 lectures.

This book was not finished when C. H. Spurgeon died, and at the time Mrs. Spurgeon thought, after the publication of her dear husband's Commentary on the gospel according to MATTHEWThe Gospel of the Kingdom (the almost-completed precious volume that memorializes Spurgeon's transition from preaching the Gospel on earth to entering the Kingdom in heaven, also published by Pilgrim),that The Art of Illustration should be the next unfinished book to be published, with Spurgeon's long-time private secretary J. W. Harrald assisting her in the preparation.

Of the seven lectures included in The Art of Illustration, the first two were revised and stereotyped during Mr. Spurgeon's lifetime. Three of the others were partially revised by him, before being re-delivered to a later company of students than those who heard them for the first time. The two remaining lectures are printed substantially as they appeared in the reporter's transcripts; only such verbal corrections have been made as were absolutely necessary to ensure accuracy of statement so far as it could be ascertained.

Now, for the first time (year 1990), the new PILGRIM PUBLICATIONS edition contains all FOUR original "Lectures" volumes, unedited & unabridged in one durable book, and is therefore very substantial in size832 pages. The gold-stamped, top quality cloth binding matches our other great C. H. Spurgeon TITLESNEW PARK STREET PULPIT, METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE PULPIT, The TREASURY OF DAVID (Psalms Commentary), and C. H. SPURGEON'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY. This series is a must for the student, pastor, or teacher! And our edition will be especially appreciated by church and educational librarians, as well as by others who prefer clothbound volumes over other styles.

Along with the Lectures series, Mr. Spurgeon had other works of a similar character published (such as: The SOUL WINNER, AN ALL-ROUND MINISTRY, ONLY A PRAYER MEETING, ECCENTRIC PREACHERS, FEATHERS FOR ARROWS, FLASHES OF THOUGHT etc). In one of the volumes previously published, he wrote of more works in preparation: "It is hoped that THE COLLEGE SERIES may render efficient service to preachers of the gospel. Friends who appreciate the books will greatly oblige by making them known to others. The same motive which prompted the author to write, leads him to desire a large circle of readers." Now that the beloved President has been called home, it is more important than ever that his books should be placed in the hands of the young preachers who will not have the privilege of hearing his voice.

19th Century REVIEWS

"We have read this work with a feeling very nearly approaching to delight. Nothing that Mr. Spurgeon has printed has so thoroughly pleased us, and few of his works are calculated to be of greater practical service. It abounds in words of wisdom. It is rich in humour, but richer in human and spiritual experience."[Nonconformist]

"Mr. Spurgeon has selected topics of practical importance, such as the call to the ministry, the preacher's private prayer, sermon matter, the arrangement of the voice, impromptu speech, the choice of a text, and the like; and on each and all of the themes thus taken up he has much to say that is worth hearing, and he says it in a way that at once enlists the reader's attention. Every point is illustrated in a forcible, homely style, and pulpit anecdotes of the most interesting character abound in these pages."[The Rock]

"This book (Lectures, Second series) is undeniably interesting and instructive; here and there occurs an amusing and suggestive anecdote; and many of its pages are equal in point and power to the ablest passages of the first series."[The Record]

"Every candid reader will admit that, in impartiality, in terse and telling brevity, in wisdom sharpened into wit, in unaffected zeal for Christ's cause, and above all, in robust common-sense, this volume (COMMENTING AND COMMENTARIES) has few equals, if any."[Literary World]

What do you think was Spurgeon's greatest contribution,

other than his sermons?

       "His institutions,

        especially his Pastor's college for the training of ministers and missionaries,

        and also the published LECTURES TO MY STUDENTS, which have

The Power of

FAITH

The Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon had a DYNAMIC FAITH that lead him to be the great evangelist preacher of mid-nineteenth century England. Not since John Wesley had one man preached to an influenced the lives of so many people. He was called the "Prince of Preachers."

His early life was spent under the influence of both his father and grandfather who were parish ministers. At sixteen, while still in school at Cambridge he preached his first sermon. A little church in Waterbeach invited him to remain there as their pastor. So while still in school he had his first pastorate. His father wanted him to go on to the University, but Charles being an avid reader with an inquisitive mind decided to stay with the ministry.

At nineteen Charles became the minister of the New Park Street Chapel in London. It was a time in London when church attendance was at a low ebb. But Charles's persuasive oratory soon filled the church to overflowing. It was evident that he needed more space and the Metropolitan Tabernacle was built to hold 6000 people. Along with being the greatest evangelist of his time, he wrote many books; founded an orphanage that grew to 500 children; published a religious newspaper known as The Sword and the Trowel; was president of a seminary and personally helped many young men become ministers.

Charles H. Spurgeon gave great enthusiasm to the spiritual life in London during his time, yet he remained a simple man who found "Books in running brooks, and Sermons in Stones."by Woodi Ishmael, AP Newsfeatures

TO A YOUNG MINISTER

"A good minister of Jesus Christ"1 Timothy 4:6

The  Lord  Christ  Jesus  with  thy  spirit  be:

Thee  may  his  presence  gladden,  help,  defend:
Him  serve  with  all  thy  powers  continually:
His  glory  seek,  and  on  his  love  depend.

The  work  is  thine,  to  lead  mankind  to  God;

On  Christ's  behalf,  with  sinful  men  to  plead;
To  point  them  to  the  sin-atoning  blood;
With  quickening,  saving  truth  their  souls  to  feed.

"Watch  thou  in  all  things;"  "to  thyself  take  heed;"

Claim  all  the  blessings  through  the  Saviour  given;
A  Christian  be  in  heart,  in  word,  in  deed;
Live  as  becomes  "an  heir  of  God"  and  heaven.

Be  it  thy  care  as  much  of  Christ  to  know

As  heart  can  feel,  as  spirit  can  conceive;
And  strive  his  love  and  preciousness  to  show,
That  men  in  him  may  savingly  believe.

And  by  thy  means,  through  his  abundant  grace,

May  many  souls  from  sin  and  death  be  won;
And  mayest  thou  stand  with  joy  before  his  face,
And  see  him  smile,  and  hear  him  say, "WELL  DONE."
