Burner... Spray Paint meets Postscript!

PenUltimate Digital Type Foundry has broken the multiple color font barrier. Head designer Chris MacGregor spent four months researching, designing, and testing new ways to use fontographer to bring the world a realistic graffitti-like font.
Chris' first attempt at designing a graffitti like typeface was Tagged. He took his inspiration from graffitti that had been left on the busses in the city of Houston. Tagged is available from [T-26] in Chicago (phone 312.787.TYPE).
Tagged just did not catch the very colorful work that was found on the walls in North Houston, so Chris went about designing Burner in a different way. First a series of sketches of graffitti from all over Houston was collected. These drawings would form the basis of the typeface. Next the 'spine' of each letter was drawn into Fontographer as an open path. Once completed these spines were expanded, cut, outlined, cut again and duplicated, using similar techniques to Chops in Photoshop, so that there were six different versions of the font with the same spacing. This new style of font has been named Chroma-fonts.

First a black background to build the font onto.

Then a line added to the background to add color and movement.

Next a large color area to outline the main character area.

Now a highlight is added to the color area to again add energy to the design.

The letter begins to take shape with the addition of the final outline.

The typeface come togeather as a whole to form a graffitti style that is unmatched by any other typeface claiming to emulate graffitti.

Burner has been accused of being unlegible, but this feature is built in intentionally. Graffitti as an artform is a way of expressing your message to those who will care to read it. Many of the pieces seen on subways and the like are over looked every day by people who do not care to take the time to read. Burner allows the reader to become part of the message by making him or her have to understand the type to get the message.

Burner (all six components) is available from PenUltimate for licencing now. If you are interested, please E-mail us today!
