AOL GENEALOGY FORUM

The Forum's File Libraries Get a Face Lift

In April, the AOL Genealogy Forum's (keyword: roots) File Libaries structure changed to include five categories: Ancestors; History and Culture; Records; Logs, Newsletters, and More; and Software and Tools. The text map offered as a finding tool later in this document reflects these changes. In the near future, GFS Morgan may be rearranging the Forum's Resource Center to highlight the ethnic areas presently behind the [History and Culture] button. This should make it even easier to find the Forum's Hispanic and other ethnic resources as they continue to be uploaded by various members and linked by our staff.

I'm Back!

Michael Rosado (GFSMike@aol.com) rejoined Team Hispanic's activities in late May, having completed his latest semester of schooling. Michael maintains the AOL Hispanic Genealogy Group's web site (http://users.aol.com/mrosado007/), uses several e-lists to advertise the group's activities, and coordinates much of Team Hispanic's "behind the scenes" work with Valencia Nelson (GFSVKN@aol.com) and George Morgan (GFSMorgan@aol.com). Now that he has the summer off, he will be resuming a more active role in our Monday and Thursday meetings.

Meet Our Newest Team Hispanic Staffer!

As many of you have heard, our newest Genealogy Forum staff members include Roy Martínez of the Los Bexareños Genealogical Society in San Antonio, Texas. You will usually find him in either our Monday or Thursday meetings as RoyTX. Roy joined the Forum and our Team Hispanic in late May, and he has already made a great impact by fielding questions related mostly to the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. He is even planning to create a Los Bexareños web site soon, so watch for news of that on our group's Texas web page (http://users.aol.com/mrosado007/tx.htm) and in our next newsletter. Again, welcome aboard, Roy!

TCI Genealogical Resources Books List

Among the recent bevy of uploads to the AOL Genealogy Forum's Hispanic areas is a catalog from TCI Genealogical Resources, the organization founded by Peter E. Carr (pecarr@slonet.org) to promote West Indian/Cuban genealogy. You can download the file from the Forum's Hispanic Files library. It synopsizes his "Guide to Cuban Genealogical Research," "Censos, Padrones, y Matriculas de la Poblacion de Cuba de los Siglos 16-18," and the "Caribbean Historical and Genealogical Journal." Together these constitute some of the best how-to data available in these fields. They can be purchased from TCI Genealogical Resources' web site (http://www.best.com/~aknight/tci/).

GENERAL HISPANIC

Andorra GenWeb Needs Help!

Rebecca Chaky (MathQuilt@aol.com), the administrator of the Andorra GenWeb page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~wgandorr/), is looking for someone to assume her duties in that capacity as she currently maintains several other sites, including pages for Hungary, Norway, Sweden, and Germany, and has little time to devote to another. The WorldGenWeb, like its sister project USGenWeb, is an extremely worthwhile effort in which to participate as it is helping to bring together cyberspace resources relating to a single country/region onto one web site for ease of use and connectivity. If anyone wishes to know more about the Andorra GenWeb project, please contact Rebecca at MathQuilt@aol.com as your earliest convenience.

GSHA Southern California Chapter's Annual Conference

The Southern California chapter of the Genealogical Society of Hispanic America (GSHA) will have its annual conference at the Seaport Marina in Long Beach, CA, on July 18-20, 1997. The theme will be "Viva La Familia," and a few of the noted participants will be Paul Apodaca, Dr. Rick Hendricks, and co-authors Norma Flores and Patsy Castro. For further information, contact Pauline Chavez at (714) 965-3291 and/or visit the GSHA Southern California chapter's web site (http://home.earthlink.net/~ririgoyen/conf.htm).

HGS's 18th Annual Conference

The Hispanic Genealogical Society in Houston, Texas, will sponsor its 18th annual conference on October 10-12, 1997, at the Renaissance Hotel in Houston. The theme this year is "Querer es Poder," and some of the speakers include Claudia Constantine, Raul Guerra Jr., and Karen and Dr. Lyman Platt. For specific times and other details, read the HGS's advertisement on the Internet (http://pages.prodigy.com/PSHF15A/18conf.htm).

HGSNY's Puerto Rican Genealogy Workshop

On June 21, 1997, the Hispanic Genealogical Society of New York and La Casa de la Herencia Cultura Puertorriquena will have a workshop on Puerto Rican and Hispanic genealogy at The Puerto Rican Cultural Heritage House in New York City. Activities will include lectures and consultations on everything from getting started to conducting research in Spain. Seats should be reserved in advance by calling Lourdes Rolon at (212) 722-2600 or visiting HGSNY's web site (http://www.webcom.com/hgsny/).

Mexico GenWeb is Finally Here!

In late May, the MexicoGenWeb site (http://www.dsenter.com/worldgenweb/CentralAm/Mexico/) came online, thanks to the undertaking of Charlotte M. Meyer (cmmeyer@clinton.net). Like all such sites, the MexicoGenWeb focuses on collecting Internet resources pertaining to all kinds of Mexican genealogy and history. Charlotte has divided the page into sections, one for every Mexican state, and wants to put each one up for adoption. If anyone is interested in adopting a Mexican State GenWeb page, please contact Charlotte as soon as possible (cmmeyer@clinton.net).

SAGA's "Exploring Your Hispanic Roots" Workshop

The Spanish-American Genealogical Society (SAGA) and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission are co-sponsoring a workshop about "Exploring Your Hispanic Roots: How to Succeed in Hispanic Family History Research" from July 28-August 1, 1997, featuring Dr. George Ryskamp in Corpus Cristi, Texas. The workshop will be conducted in Corpus Cristi on July 28 with a book-signing reception afterwards. Additional workshops (which SAGA is not co-sponsoring) will be held in Richmond (July 29), San Antonio (July 31), and Dallas (August 1). Queries should be directed to either Mae Murray (mae.murray@tsl.state.tx.us) or Mira Smithwick (SAGACorpus@aol.com).

SUCCESS STORIES

A Betancourt Bingo!
by Michael Rosado on behalf of Raymond Rios

Last year, Raymond put several of his surnames in our AOL Hispanic Genealogy Group's Surnames database (http://users.aol.com/mrosado007/surnames.htm) including the last name of his maternal grandfather, Betancourt, of whom he knew very little. Earlier this year, he received an e-mail from a Patricia Necochea who had seen his entry there and decided to try a hunch. It turned out that she is Raymond's aunt and a descendant of that long-lost Betancourt grandfather! Since then, he has procurred information about many other aunts, uncles, and cousins from that connection; and he promptly and kindly informed the AOL Genealogy Forum's Hispanic staff of this success so that we could, in turn, tell you about it. He even put a note to that effect on his web page (http://www.geocities.com/~rayrios/). Thanks, Ray. See, it really does work!

An Unexpected Happening
by Dr. Mary Sevilla

In working our genealogy, I have found and heard that many unexpected incidents keep happening. I think we have to be open and realize that when our ancestors want to be revealed to us, they will find a way! The following is just one of the many examples of serendipity that have come my way since I began looking for my ancestors. Anyone who has been studying their family for any length of time can probably tell a few of their own stories of unexpected happenings.

Another of those marvelous genealogical miracles occurred while I was visiting a cousin a few miles from where I live in California. The mail carrier delivered a letter from Guadalajara, Mexico, from Alfonso Hernández who does not know me; but we share the same great-grandfather, Enrique Tresarrieu! In it, he reminds my cousin that his parents had seven children; and he names them all from oldest to youngest. He included a colored photo of about 70 of his family members which was taken the day after his parents' 50th wedding anniversary! He numbers 20 of them on the reverse side and on a separate paper lists their names. I had phoned these folks in August 1995 to try to find out about that branch of the family. I got some information but believe I'll get much more from Alfonso. What a bonanza! If the letter had arrived at another time, I may not have even heard about it!

Aftermath:

I wrote to Alfonso and told him we were cousins and what kind of information I was trying to gather on our family. I didn't hear from him directly, but last month my cousin called to say that he had heard from Alfonso again who said, "Tell Mary that I have been gathering family information for her. I am only waiting for one more cousin, and then I will have a big thick envelope to send her!" I am eagerly awaiting that envelope. What Alfonso doesn't know is that I now have copies of our great-grandfather's birth information from France as well as his six siblings! I am just waiting for Alfonso's envelope before I send him any more information. One good turn deserves another.
