Here's what happened at the 12th Annual Emerald City Open Footbag Tournament on June 3-4, 1995, at Lid Park on Mercer Island, Washington:
Friday night, 20 or 30 people met at Shakey's Pizza Parlor for the pre-registration party. We had a great time, ate some really good pizza, did some drinking, and dug through all the goodies in the player packets.
Saturday could not have been more beautiful! It was hot, sunny, and clear all day. After registration (a total of 52 competitors and 11 U Kick IT kids!), we cranked up the tunes and got the competition started. Piecora's New York Pizza brought mass quantities of their most excellent pizza at around noon. That, the Multi-Pure water, Odwalla juices, and Rainbow Grocery fruit filled us up for the rest of the afternoon. KOMO TV showed up in the middle of the day in time to see Dan Borsky and Kenny Shults battle it out above the net, and an impromptu doubles game thrown together for their benefit. They aired our event on the 5, 6:30 and 11 o'clock news! We made it through the finals in the Novice and Advanced categories, and through the semi-finals in Women's and Open, saving the two final singles matches for Sunday afternoon. Saturday night we hung out and ate barbecue-style (compliments of Sound Footwork) at Jim Cobb's place. Sole Purpose brought up some Full Sail brew which went down smooth.
Sunday morning we had a small amount of rain, and got off to a late start. Tricia George tried to break her 7-day-old world record in the 5 minute timed consecutive event, but was just 10 kicks short! Once the consecutive event was over, we moved on to doubles and mixed doubles net. By the time we got through all the pools and semi-finals, we over-shot our estimated finals time by 3 hours. Unfortunately, the weather turned bad at around 6 (after over 3 weeks of perfect weather?!?%#?!), and the finals matches were played in the rain.
Anyway, besides the last bit of bad weather, the weekend went really well, and everyone had an awesome time. Here are the results of the competition:
