I recently moved to a new house and found two bicycles above the garage. One is a Royce Union with a vinyl saddle bag, black and white with white wall tires. It must have a gear box in the rear hub because there is a third line coming from the right handlebar. The second bike has ballon tires and a battery powered light on the front fender. No markings other than a curved H on the bolts. I know nothing about bicycles and I'd appreciate advice.
Message:
Tough to tell the date. but late 1950's - early 1960's sounds right for that
tire size
Message:
Oh yeah, and the truss rods would put it
on the 'earlier' side.
Message:
The Royce Union is a common 3-speed with maybe a
'grip shift'. Not worth much. Probably from the late
1960's or early 1970's. The Balloon tire bike is a keeper, though.
The light alone might be worth $75!

Hector, your Schwinn is from 1979. The way you can tell is by the second letter in the serial number. The first year of production using this method was 1965, thus the letter A. Production continued up until 1984 using this method. Hope this helps.

Message:
As promised here's some info on the Lack's Flyer: It's a boy's 26", red with white lettering and pinstriping on the peaked fenders, 26" x 1.75" tires, and a Perry coaster hub (made in England!?). The "decal" on the seat tube says, in a oval pattern, "Masterweld/ manufactured by AMF Wheeel Goods Division". The chain guard (patent number 2,492.879) reads "Lack's Flyer". The name plate is oval and has, from the top, an outline of the state of Texas and the Lacks name following to the bottom. Serial number: 034241 which is on the left rear dropout. I bought the bike for $20.00 at a garage sale in Fort Worth, Texas. The bke is in very good condition. My theory is AMF made this bike for a Autoparts or drugstore named Lack's. I would like to find out what year this bike was manufactured and info about the AMF Wheel Goods Division. Thanks, Dave.

I was recently given a Schwinn Fiesta bike, Serial #N443227. Could anyone give me some idea of its value? It is light pink and white/cream, in fair condition. It has, as far as I can tell, the original chrome bullet light and tank horn. The rear red light/reflector is missing and the tires are not original. There is a Schwinn light mounted on the steering tube that was apparently added. I am the pastor of a church and the bike was given to me to sell, and to give the proceeds to the church. Thanks

I have an older frame that I am restoring and I am looking for help in
identifying if it is a custom-built or a production frame. Here is what I
know:
1. I was "told" it was built by a Univ. of Washington intern.
2. It appears to have all Nervex lugs, and has stamped dropouts with no
derailleur hanger.
3. The BB shell has "RGF" in a circle stamped in the top of the left side.
On the bottom just ahead of where the chainstays meet the shell is a spade,
and it has the number 58 stamped on it too.
4. The Left rear dropout has the number 747906 stamped in it
5. The chainstays wrap around the seat tube but the ends do not touch.
6. It has cantilever bosses all around.
Any ideas? What vintage, what colors would be appropriate to paint it, and
in what style?
Thanks,
Hal.

Acquired 2 bikes. One decent 26 JC Higgins 3 speed(LNH) with name cut out of sprocket and serial # under crank. Has 1 3/8 Allstate tires on it. Says made in Austria and seems overengineered. Other is a girls 26x1 3/4 tank bike. Chain guard missing but has crest between tank and crank that reads "Super". Front badge is partially faded and ends in "tive". Rear hub is Carroll. Rear fender chrome with indented pinstripes. Also star shaped crank. Frames on both bikes are reinforced at welds. Any help would be appreciated.
Message:
More... Serial # for Higgins is 1433988 and girls tank bike is 965565. Both located under pedal crank.
Message:
The 3-speed is probably a 1960, give or take
a couple years either way. JC Higgins only made those 3-speeds
for a few years - they were trying to complete with Raleigh, et al.
The other bike is probably late 1950s to late 1960s, based on tire size.
Message:
kath, what about that Carrol hub ? I've never seen one. Hmmmm.
Message:
Au Contrare. J.C. Higgins 3-speeds were around at least in the late 1940s and certainly in wide production by the mid-1950s. By 1960, there were gazillions of Higgins 3-speeds already in the market (important note: not all Higgins models were shown in every -or even any- Sears catalogue). It is certainly unclear (at the least) as to Sear's intent to "compete with Raleigh" or any particular brand of bicycle. Rather, the Higgins 3-speed was an attempt to provide European style alternative lightweight bicycles and/or English-type 3-speeds in general. There is no way to date simply from a serial number. For Higgins, a model number is required. As for tire size dating...a middleweight bicycle such as indicated could be anywhere from the 1950s thru the 1980s (or even later)...there is no reason to stop at the 1960s based on this tire size. There were lots made many years later.

Yeah, the Krates were great for popping wheelies. Nice soft landing
with that springer fork, too. On the (possible) Sting-Ray Jr. Where on the bike
did it say "Sting-Ray". And how big were the wheels? Maybe it is a 'Midget', not a 'Junior'. The
Junior is almost a full size Sting-Ray. The frame is about an inch shorter, and the cranks are about 1/2" shorter, but
the untrained eye can't tell a Junior from a regular Sting-Ray. The Midget had 12" or 16" wheels, Not 20" like a regular Sting-Ray
or a Junior. And I thin the Midgets had removable top bars. I'll bet it is a midget.

You can probably determine the year of your bike by removing the
cranks- a date code should be on
the crank center (between the bearing races).

Message:
Murray middleweight Astro Flites were not made until the 1960s. No way it could be from the 1950s. Dating bicycles by tire size can be risky since it cannot be determined without photos whether the tires have been changed. Nor can one know for sure without detailed info which era the model is from. Also, middleweight tires officially debuted on American-built bicycles for the 1954 model year, not 1957. NBHAA has every Murray catalogue, starting from the begining of the company.

Now, on the bottom bracket shell, on the dowtube portion on that shell, there is "63" that is stamped. I don't think that is the size because it measures more like a 58 cm. Is it the year or the serial number. I don't have a picture available but the frame is of a "girl" type but more complicated than the average girl frame. It also has a kickstand that hooks on the rear rack and when it jacks the wheel up 2 inches when you put the stand down. This bike had been repainted but no stickers are underneath that paint and there is no head badge either. Any help appreciated-----> year and make. Tires are 28x 1 3/8" (700C x 38). Valve is presta. I'm not sure the date it started, but schwinn curently dates their bikes by stamping 4 numbers on the head badge. the first three are the julian date, the fourth is the year. 1009 would be the 100th day of 89. hope this info can be of some use to people.

MSavage, I'm not sure what rough is, but I'd say that it's in
fair shape. About 2 years ago my son and I started to restore
it and didn't get to far before quiting. So it's in pieces right
now. I'm not sure if we should finish sanding off the rust and
ruff paint or not. We really would like to restore it. Again,
thanks for all your help with advise. P.S. I'm not sure what
the BMX topic thing is. I hope I don't sound dumb. Bill

Bill, not sure if you come directly to this page,
or if you go to Menotomy's home page first, and then
click on _DISCUSSION AREA_. But, on the DISCUSSION AREA page of
this web site there is a list of topics. Right now you are in the "BICYLE DATING" topic.
If you look further down the list of topics on the DISCUSSION AREA page you'll see a topic
for BMX bikes. That is what MSavage is referring to.

It would be helpful if you gave a more complete description. What size are the tires? What kind of brake(s)? Most Columbia bikes have a serial number under the bottom bracket(crank housing, pedal housing) that consists of a letter and 4-6 digits. A number beginning with D would have been made in 1939 or 1958. JIm

Red pin stripe with black tank. Front fender had a light, fenders black. KICK STAND IS BEHIND THE BACK TIRE, rims are 24". Three springs on the seat, skiptooth sprocket. Hedstrom Union Co. The frame is very tall considering the size of the wheels. I think these are called sidewalk bikes
but hey what do I know? I'm trying to decide if I should restore it or sell/trade it. Thanks

I am desparate for info about my Ross; year, history, model, value, etc.
Here is the info I have-mayby someone else can help me from there:
1. There is no kickstand. A 1950's ad shows the same bike except "equipped
as shown with kickstand".
2. The original tire is a US Royal Rubber "with the built-in skid chain", as
advertised.
3. No reflectors on pedals.
4. Brass soldering-may indicate the late 40s or early 50s.
5. The coaster brake is a red stripe Bendix supposedly from the 60s, and the rear tire
is a newer Goodyear with a Schwinn inner tube.
6. The red and white Messinger saddle is probably from the late 50s or 60s, but
appears original.
7. serial #: R63103620
I don't know if any of these details will help or not, but anyone who knows
anything about this 26" boy's bike please reply. Thanks.
Message:
I just bought an old boy's bicycle with red wooden rims and full fenders. Everything is there and it appears to be an interesting restoration project. The bike is most likely American, has 1920's motorcycle-style handlebars, and has one speed. The top bar has a bend in it near the seat. In trying to identify the bicycle maker and the bike's age, I was trying to determine how late they put wooden rims on bikes. Could this be teens or am I looking at 1920's or 1930's? Also, does anyone know how I can identify who made the bike? The headbadge is gone. If anyone would like a picture, I can send an HTML file.
Message:
In my message entitled "Unknown Ross", I forgot to post the tire size.
It is 26 x 1.75 (middleweight).
Message:
I picked up the bike last night and here is more information. The bike has 28 X 1 1/2 wooden rims with 'tubular-style' tires on it. The tires are hard with age, but show a street tread pattern on each of them. The rear tire is a Rollfast and the front is an unmarked whitewall tubular. My feeling is the front tire might be the orginal tire and the rear might be a replacement. The valve stem on the rear is a Schraeder with a metal cap. The bike is a single speed with New Departure front and rear hubs. The chain is skip-tooth. I believe the bike was originally bright red, but it has a coat of burgundy house paint on it now. Overall, it looks like it will be a relatively easy restoration with the exception that someone welded one of the pedals to the crank.
Message:
I finally got the bike home last night and have more information. The wheels are 28 X 1 1/2 inch wooden wheels with tubular-style tires on them. The rear tire is a Rollfast and the front is a whitewall with no writing. The frone loos older than the rear and may be one of the original tires. The bike has New Departure front and rear hubs. The rear is one speed with coaster brake. The bike has been painted with barn paint, but the original looks to be red. Overall, it is quite restorable. The only potential problem is someone welded one of the pedals to the crank arm. Any information on this bike would be greatly appreciated.

Serial # is A37920. Will that help date it? How can I find out about the original paint colors? What is it's value as is? restored? thanks Tom

Message:
I have a bike I built from junk (already old) parts in the early 70's. Hanging around this site has piqued my curiosity - I doubt that it's collectible or restorable, but I'd like to identify and date the frame if I can, just for fun. The frame is a girl's model, one piece crank, forward-facing rear dropouts, serial # under the bottom bracket is G57877. All the frame tubes are straight, the two down tubes are parallel and connected at their midpoints by a smaller diameter tube parallel to the seat and head tubes. The frame joints at the rear dropouts look like Schwinn EF-type welds, and the head tube joints are smooth and Schwinn-like. The wheels on the bike now may or may not be original: New Departure front hub and coaster brake, 26x1.375 hooked-edge American lightweight rims/tires. The chainstays are dimpled inside to clear the tires, but even so I don't think there's room for balloon tires. Any ideas? Thanks.
