Message:
I was doing some shopping for a turn-of-the-century bike this past summer. I found that pre-1897 safeties (looks like bikes made today) are generally well made, collectable, and worth $500+ unrestored. In 1896-97 the department stores started entering the market, so you have to watch the quality. Those bikes go for $200-1500 unrestored depending on condition, original quality, and completeness. Indian, Columbia, Iver Johnson and some other big name brands are worth more. Features like shaft drive (chainless), fancy suspension designs, fancy paint & pinstriping, etc will increase the value as well. There were a lot of bikes made in the 1890-1910 bicycle boom years due to the fact that adults used these bikes for mobility as well as entertainment. Velodromes (oval indoor racetracks) were built in major cities and six day, 24 hours a day races with associated betting was very popular. After 1910, people in the US began losing interest in bicycles as commuting vehicles and began concentrating on motorcycles and the new 'horseless carriages'. In the 1920's, bicycles began looking more like motorcycles of the period without engines. To summarize, turn-of-the-century bicycles are worth at least $200 for the worst basket case and could be worth thousands depending on rareity, desireability, interesting features, and condition.

Recently my uncle gave me a Goodyear Hi Way Patrolbike in original condition. It has rust but is all original. It has a odd springer front end. He told me it is fromthe 30's. I can't find a picture of it. It does not have a tankor front head light. Do you know what year this might be or what the valueis? The front sprocket is not a skip tooth. I thought ifis very collectable I will have it professionally restored. The paint is pretty far gone. The tires are original "lightning"tires with two indian heads on each. They are in good condition. Thanks for any info you may have, Ken W.

I see a guy on the web selling a restored Schwinn Sting-Ray Fastback for $750 and a restored Schwinn Sting-Ray Apple Krate for $1400. Is that where prices are heading? Who can afford that? Why are asking prices moving up so fast this winter? Is it because everyone is into "retro" and the 1960's and 1970's? Is it due to rumors that Schwinn may be building a new Sting-Ray knockoff? Who'll be able to afford originals??
Message:
Peter, I'm seeing the same thing at swap meets and the local classifieds here in Southern CA. Usually it slows down and prices drop at the start of winter, especially around the holidays. But sellers are holding firm on prices and its getting hard to find bikes right now.

Hi: I have an Evans 200 that I want to restore. It needs alot of work and I don`t know if it woul be worth the monney I would pute into it. Does anyone know the price of my bike after a cumplete resteration? Thank you: Donald
Message:
I see only the muscle bikes going up. I'm still seeing good deals on middleweights and ballooners.
Message:
Keep in mind that vintage bicycle collecting is still very new. As a result prices will be volatile and certain regional pricing difference will exist. An unrestored bike that might sell for $800 in southern California might only get $200 in Des Moines, Iowa for example. It will be another 5 years at least until prices stabilize around the country in my opinion.
Message:
I'll tell you why the Stingrays and muscle bikes are going up. Many of the Baby Boomers (or tail-end Boomers) now have a few extra bucks. Their children are getting less expensive as they grow out of daycare age or out of school altogether. Their salaries are peaking. They are feeling more mortal. And they want to have something that brings back memories of their childhood. There is even a new book sold through Memory Lane Classics which is devoted JUST to Sting-Rays. A whole flippin' book!

I need some help identifying a Columbia mens bike. The tires are 26x2.125. It is completely original with no repairs or reworking. It is maroon with white striping etc. The seat is covered with what looks like a vinyl type material that looks original (seat has always been covered). There is a tank with a horn. It also has a luggage rack on back. There is also a large wire basket in front. The chrome on the rims has some rust as do the two rods that run down the front. It also has a mirror and kickstand. I would say the bike is overall in better than good condition. The only thing that appears to be missing is what ever was mounted on the front of the front fender. There are two holes about 2 inchse apart where it was mounted. I did locate a number on the rear frame near the tire axel. It reads B149062. Any help would be appreciated.

Sears Spaceliners were NOT made 1959-1964. They did not appear until 1963 and continued to be made sseveral years afterward. You should be aware thaat there were also several different designs and years and trim levels of Spaceliners, not merely one. National Bicycle History Archive of America (http://members.aol.com/oldbicycle )has all records and info on these bicycles.

I may buy this one also but wanted to check values. Any thoughts.

The value of old English 3-speeds is not very well established on a worldwide or even a US level. There are areas, such as the northeast, with a glut of those bikes. There are areas such as the southwest and Florida where there is a shortage. England has a true glut and some great deals on some very interesting bikes can be found. I have purchased flawless bikes from the 1970's for $10-30 and a nice rod brake Dunelt for $60, but I live where there is an oversupply of them. I have heard of people paying over $200 for bikes needing a complete rebuild. What your bikes are worth depends on where you are located and how you plan to market/sell them.

My prediction: Balloon tire bikes will hold steady or drop a bit.
Middleweights will go up a bit. Safety's and highwheelers will hold steady.
Sting-Rays and other branded (even Tylers) will go up a lot, particularly if (as I've heard)
major bike companies start putting out some bikes with ape hangers and banana seats to cash in
on the '70s (bellbottoms, clogs, platform shoes) fad. You heard it here first.

My fiance's friend has a 1950's Schwinn Cruiser in mint condition (except for some dust) The tires are original, except for some cracks on the sides of the tires (I assume dry rot). The tires are clean. The seat is in excellent shape, paint is excellent and all original. It is a girls bike painted blue with a rack in the back. He obtained the bike from a woman who moved and couldn't take it with her. She originally bought it for $250.00 somewhere in the Southwest. It has a sticker where it was bought somewhere in California. I don't have exact place, info. He would like to know what the value is on this. A very nice bike!

Does it have a tank or lights? Is there a model
name on the chainguard or the tank?

Some additional details regarding the '41 Hawthorne girls bike: Tires are 26x2.125 Wards Riverside Mate and appear to be original. It has a springer fork and a torpedo shaped light on the front fender, rack in back but no tank. Handlebars are a semi-circular shape and pedal cranks have a slight offset jog. Blue paint in very good condition, original saddle has one small scuff. Chrome is pretty well pitted and handgrips are cracked/broken. I'll try to post a picture as soon as possible. Any input would be greatly apprciated.

I bought a bike today that I am unable to ID or date. It is a girl's 3 speed model. The closest thing I
can find in my Pridmore/Hurd book is on page 63. It looks like the green men's bike shown on this
page. The book, however refers to these bikes as "New Worlds, lower priced than the Paramount
and Superior". This bike has a round headbadge with "Schwinn" on the top arc and "Continental" on
the bottom arc and "AS" in the center of the badge. The handlebar and seat clamps are fastened by
bolts with "AS" on the bolt heads. The bars are double adjustable with an aluminum stem. The
brake calipers are chromed with "Schwinn Built" stamped on them. The clamp-on cranks say
"Nervar". The rear hub says "Type 9 Hercules, made in England". The front sproket is very cool. It
has "A S & C O" stamped into the spokes as seen on the bike in the previously mentioned photo.
Seat as pictured too! A serial number is stamped on the frame above the kickstand. It is 626602.
The bike is pretty original with original paint and a flawless chainguard. Anyone willing to take a stab
at a date or value? Email me privately if you wish. Thanks!

I have a decent fastback with a problematical coaster hub.I also have a NOS Suntour 3sp "T" shifter and a NOS S/A 3sp hub.If I add these along with a rear hand brake, will I lessen it's value ?What is the value either way?
Message:
Suntour or Shimano shifter? If it is a stick-shift, I'd guess you mean Shimano.
This bike did not originally have multi-speeds? I didn't know there was a coaster
Fastback. (but I'm learning every day). I think your best bet will be to keep it as original as
possible if you are trying to keep resale in mind. An NOS Sturmey-Archer hub would be correct for that bike, but lacing
is a lot of work, and the wrong stick shift will deteract from that effort. Why not rebuild the current hub
or re-lace another Bendix into it?
Message:
Are you sure it is old? Or do you mean old as in 20 or so years?
A name like Malibu Hopper sounds like a repro trying to catch the beach bike craze.
Message:
What tire sizes? How about better info?
Message:
Sure sounds like one of the first Continentals. Maybe late 50s or very early 60's. Value? Maybe $125-$275
Message:
That is a pretty loaded ballooner. Without a picture
it is tough to tell for sure, but I'd say around $350+
Message:
I'd have to agree with the message above suggesting you keep it original. Why? Well, since it is
posted here under the Biycle Value topic, I'd guess you are looking to get it into shape to
sell and maximize your return. So, keep it as close to original as you can. Now on the otherhand, if you just
want to ride and enjoy it, by all means upgrade it and make it easier to cruise with.
Message:
I agree with the previous opinions on muscle bike prices. If you've seen
the new Liz Fried and Bruce Filgate Sting-Ray book, and had a look at their
suggested prices, you'll see where the muscle bikes are going. All the baby boomers who had those
bikes as kids will pay those prices for their one bike. They won't be looking to collect a bunch of muscle bikes. Just one
or two. And they'll find the Sting-Ray book at Barns & Noble book store and quickly shell out those prices if they can
find a bike they want. Now the ballooners and middleweights: I don't think their prices will be going anywhere. They've already moved
up in price a lot over the past decade, and the people who owned them as kids either already have one or are not interested in collecting anything as they get
older and older and older and older.

Message:
I've been puzzled for a long time by a question which maybe someone out there can help
me answer to. I own a rare Columbia Model 40 "Safety bicycle", built by
the Pope Manufacturing Company in 1895. It is absolutely complete, with
no parts missing, including the beautiful "Model 40" nameplate, on which
1895 patent dates are engraved. It even has its original black paint
coating. Of course, it needs total restoration, but this bicycle really
could be brought back to its usable condition. For the last fifty or
sixty years, it was hung by hooks on a wall in a shed, which probably
explains why it hasn't been crushed in some way. After unhanging it and
taking off years of dust, I realized what I had found.
I discoverd a very accurate description of it in Eugene A. Sloane's 1970
book, "The new complete book of bicycling", Simon and Schuster editors,
New York. It says:
"It might interest some of our readers to review the specifications of a
few of the safety bicycles of the 1890s. For example, the new 1898 line
of Columbia bicycles, made by Pope Manufacturing Company, had a split
crank shaft. Model 40 Columbia "light roadsters", selling for $100, had
a 23-inch frame, 10-inch steering head, 28-inch wheels, 1 and 5/8
pneumatic 'Hartford' tires, detachable sprockets, improved self-oiling
chain, 6¾-inch patent round cranks, 5-inch tread, 3 and 5/6-inch pedals,
reversible handlebars, tubular seat rod, 66-inch gear and weighed 24
lbs".
Let me add that it has unbroken wooden rims, a leather seat, and wooden
handles with leather grip.
My puzzle, is finding out how this beauty can be worth today. I know,
for example, that an Otto bicycle from the same era was sold at
Sotheby's for $37 000, about 5 years ago. Of course, I suppose it was
in perfect condition, and I do not take that as any indication of how my
Model 40 might be worth.
Anyway, if you have any information about that, or any reference where I
could try finding out the answer, I would greatly appreciate your
help.
Message:
$55 is about right if it is in excellent condition.
Otherwise, I'd just wait for another one. There a re a

Message:
It sounds like you've got a very special
oldy there. Be very careful what you do with
it. Don't attempt any kind of restoration or even
cleanup unless you know what you are doing. Consult
some price guides and ask other collectors as to
it's value an possible restoration. Also
send email to OLDBICYCLE@AOL.COM. This guy's name
is Leon and he really knows his stuff. He runs the National
Bicycle History Association (I think that is the name)

I'm not familiar with that model. Or is it a brand?

Anyone have any idea of the value of a 1920's Elgin Girl's bike in rough condition but restoreable. I haven't pinned down the year yet.
Tire size: 28"x1.5"
Female frame
Repainted black. No original paint left
Seat condition: Troxel seat with beehive springs, good mohair pad, no cover whatsoever
36-spoke wheels, metal clad wood rims, rear rim warped or bent
Extra features: Original rear rack
Ornate chain guard used on Hawthorne, Puritan, and Elgin girl's bikes from 1919-1937 in good condition
New Departure Hub
Sprocket: Star pattern with internal tear drops
All nickel plating needs to be redone, surface rust on all
No drop stand or skirt guard
Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Jim

No handle grips
Pneumatic tires (single tube) are worthless

I have two John Deere "blue" 3 speeds, boy and girl, 26 inch, good condition.
Would appreciate information regarding value.
Message:
The John Deere 3-speeds were made in the
early 1970s. Japanese bikes, I think. When you say they
are blue, could you possibly mean "John Deere Green"? I've
only seen white and JD green. Price? Maybe $100-$200 EA
Message:
These are John Deere blue frames with chrome fenders.
It is my understanding (and I may be wrong) that these are rather rare bikes.
I have had them for many years and obviously don'y know much about vintage bikes.
I did read an article in a John Deer publication that indicated they were hard to find.
Any information would be appreciated.

At the top of this page there are some
tips on info to give about a bike. Tire
size, features, etc. Why not put that info
here so everyone has more to go on.

Original, complete and in good condition?
Figure $350-ish? Try asking the folks who
write in the "BMX Topic" on this web site.
Message:
Those should be worth some good bux. You, too
should ask the folks who read and write under
the BMX topic.
Message:
The John Deere bikes are one Male, one Female frame, blue original paint, tire size 26 (1.75).
No additional features. Seat and paint in excellent condition.
Fenders are chrome with slight surface rust.
Both bikes are from the mid seventies.
Still have original tires.
Any ideas as to value?

A ladies model recently sold on the eBay auction for $79. Judging by that I would think the men's model would go for over $100 easily. I have seen some white/green models sell for much less though. Your mileage may vary.

I have run into some old bike parts I need some help in determing the value of. I am tearing down an old garage of a gentleman who once apparently was going into the bicycle repair business years ago. Most of the parts seem to be from England. There are lots of handle bars, rims, tubing to actually make the metal frame with, hubs, spokes, spoke ends, sprockets and assorted other parts. Some brand names include Sturney Archer, H. Miller&Co., Renold & Coventry Chain Co., Brampton and Hercules chain gaurd. If anyone knows where to go or who to call for some type of appraisal I would appreciate a message. I also have a wooden rim with the lable on it. Baruzzo. Any thoughts?

Many B.F. Goodrich bicycles were rebadged Scwinn models but I doubt if they all were. If you get the serial number from the rear left fork or on the frame below the pedals that would help. If you have an Internet services provider you should post a picture. Your local photo shop can tell you how you can get an image on a floppy if you don't have access to a scanner. Jim

I would like to establish a ballpark value on a couple of Ramblers. They are both 1970's complete originals in good to very good condition. One is red and one is gold, not coppertone, gold. I would appreciate any input.
Message:
Are you sure these aren't Columbias? Do you have serial numbers, frame styles, wheel/tire size? I'm confused ...
Message:
They are SCHWINN Scramblers. Schwinn made a transition bicycle between the Sting Ray and BMX styles. It is basically a Sting Ray frame and a BMX seat. They were a flop. I was just wondering if anyone had a clue as to the value of these bikes. Thanks.
Message:
I think the thing that confused Bob was that Oscar's
first message said "Ramblers".... Anyway, they are right in the
middle between muscle bikes and BMX. Schwinn had a few of these
transition bikes: Scramblers, Hurricanes and Typhoons. All of them had
muscle bike and BMX mix'n'match parts. They are the ugly ducklings
of both BMX and muscle bike collectors, but still draw interest
from both groups. These single speed Scamblers in good original condition
will probably fetch around $200- $275 each.
Message:
OK, I get it. I have a '77 black Scrambler that my son rides. Didn't know that they were worth that tho! Got this one at a garage sale for $35. Very nice shape too! The other Scramblers (diamond frame -- 36x36 for instance) would probably bring less than the cantilever Sting-Ray style bikes.

Folks, ya'll have got to provide more information when you
are trying to find something out about your bikes. I'll use
Terron's message as an example (sorry Terron, it's not just you, a lot of
folks do it). How can anyone help you if you only provide a the name
of the bicycle maker? Is it a man's, woman's, boy's or girl's model? That makes
a big difference. Male style bikes usually command more $$ because there are fewer of them around (boys usually kill their bikes).
.... Near the top of this page is a list in info people should provide when researching a bicycle.
Please provide as much of that info as possible. Thanks, and sorry for the rant.

My friend gave me his childhood bicycle which is a Sears Spyder "500". He's 32 so I figure the bicycle is probably from 1973 or so. It has rams horn handle bars and is a three speed with the lever on the bar like a krate bicycle. The lever is more like a little metal 10 speed lever than a big shifter. Does anyone know of this bicycle and if so does it have any value?
Message:
The Sears Spyder bikes have a good following.
That shifter doesn't sound right, though. I believe the Spyders had
a ball on the shifter. In good original condition
that bike would be around $250 - $350

I have a prewar skiptooth mens straightbar with a headbadge with the name "Pacemaker" on it. the design of the badge closely resembles a roadmaster badge of the same era. it has a full tank, with a horn button inscibed with the initials "EA". The grips have green cut glass on the ends. it has full fenders with mounting holes for a headlamp in front and a butterfly kickstand in back. the tube from the headtube to the bottom bracket is completely straight, with no curve. the chainguard is unremarkable, with three ridges along it. the hubs are new departure "D"s, and the tires are Allstate Crusaders (26x2.25) marked with the symbol "war tire". the entire bike has been repainted black, but has a lot of character, and I'd like to see it restored (by me or someone else). if anyone could tell me anything about the bike, anything at all, I'd greatly appreciate the help. please email me if possible.
