I am looking to sell an early '70s ('71 or '72 I think) Raleigh Professional, but need an approximate value. All of the components are Campy Nuovo Record including brakes, derailleurs, head set, hubs, pedals, and crank. The frame (24.5") is Reynolds 531 and the drops outs are Campy. Everything except the rims is in good to very good condition. The rims are fair. Any help in assigning a value would be helpful.

Hello, I just picked up this bike and was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about it. The badge on it says "Jim Brown Stores Inc." It has a skip tooth sprocket and a horn inside the tank. The serial number is F90941 marked under the crank. Tire size is 26x2.125 The horn is in good shape but the inside holder for it and the batteries is shot. Is there anyplace I can get a replacement piece? I recently accquired a 1939 Eligin Twin 60. It is in good condition, saya 6 on a scale of 1-10. It is missing the headlight & speedometer. There are alum. fenders & some of the chrome was painted over w/ silver paint. Paint (red) has chips and some fading. There is a conventional stem & painted chaingaurd. Seat is in fair condition. I am not looking to sell the bike, just interested in an approx. value. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I recently bought a Huffy Camero at a thrift store, and I'd like to know what it's worth. It's in excellent condition. The frame is sturdy and unbent. The purplle and white paint shows little wear. The headlight works. Even the purple glitter handle bars are in perfect condition. The only flaws are some of the chrome paint has rusted off, the tires could use new treads, and the seat is worn and may not be original. If you have any info about this bike, please let me know.

I recently bought 2 aluminum frame Montgomery-Ward bicycles. I believe one is a 1935 because the patent # is 1,998,994 which was issued that year. The seats are in poor condition and the chrome needs to be replated. The other one appears to be slightly newer and has holes apparently for decoration in the brackets where the frame tubes fit in. The 1935 model is missing the fenders. Does anyone know their approximate worth? Do these bikes has a medel name? Thanks.

If it has some sentimental value to you or to someone important in your life, then by all means fix it up. If you are fixing it up to sell for a profit or save for an investment, don't bother. It's too new to be worth anything in this decade and it's a women's frame. Those are two big negatives in today's market for vintage bicycles.

I've pared my collection down to 4 bikes now. Sold everything else
in the past few years. I've been collecting and fussing with bikes since the early 1950s.
Here's what I have learned: 1) Prices keep going up at a faster pace than inflation or stocks.
This all applies to the US market, but the general trend is always up. There are dips sometimes, and that is when I've
done my best buying. There have been times when the economy is in the crapper but people still spend money on bikes, like during
the energy crisis (twice) in the 1970s. People were pulling bikes out of the trash and riding them and selling them and it
was almost like a black market in used bikes and parts. 2) Separate your purchases into two categories: a) bikes you want to keep (you like
the style, you had one as a kid, you were jealeuos of a kid who had one, etc. and b) bikes to buy and sell to make money to buy the bikes
in category 'a'. CONTINUED..

For the bikes in category 'b' (the ones to turn over and make money on),
you can't fall in love with them. You bought them with the intention of turning them
over at a profit. If you get an offer close to your asking price, sell the bike and use
the proceedes.

Don't buy junk. Never buy a bike that has
been repainted (sorry folks!). Bicycle collecting is like
coin or stamp collecting. The scratches tell a story. You wouldn't clean the patina off an
old coin would you? A repaint will never be right. It's hard to match original colors and
even if you could you wouldn't be able to age it properly. And what are you going to do
when the new paint job gets a ding in it? Of course there are exeptions to every rule.
If you find an old rust Black Panther for $10 at a tag sale, buy it and repaint it. Just don't
expeect to get the same price an original would go for.

I have 2 girls 26 in. chrome and metallic blue Spaceliners. I think one is a '59 and the other might be a '64. The '59 has a strange closepin like shock on the front wheel. The '64 doesn't have any shocks. Both have tanks with lights and possibly horns (they're both broken) and way cool chain guards. They are both in real nice condition, only one dime sized rust spot on the '64. They are both very much rideable. The '64 has original tires, but I'll probably replace them since I ride the bike and don't like to get flats. What might they be worth? I paid $200 for the '59 and $115 for the '64. I'm not looking to sell them. I just would like to know if anyone out there thinks I got a deal.

I just thought of an idea. It doesn't answer your questions, but it may be worth a try. Make a list of what you need for your Sear Spaceliners, go to Sears, and try to order the parts. There is a chance they may still have them in their spare parts warehouse. I read about someone who found a special offer postcard from the 1950's for free Norman Rockwell prints in an old magazine. Just for fun, they filled it out, put a stamp on it, and mailed it in. To their surprise, they received a set of original Norman Rockwell prints as the card promised. The prints were worth well over $1000 each after 40 years. Of all the companies in the world, Sears is the one that might still have parts for your bike in some obscure, dusty parts bin.

There were no 1959 Spaceliners. The top model that year was a Flightliner...and THAT would not have been a Sears, since the name "J.C.Higgins" was still being used. Also, Spaceliners came in (depending upon the year) flambouyant blue or aquamarine for girls only and flambouyant red for boys models only.There were also different trim levels for Spaceliners. Last summer we acquired a bike @ a flea market. It is a Grape Krate, everything looks original including tires, of course it is a boys, the seat has silver metallic with purple offset stripe. All decals and paint look original, as well as 5-speed shifter knob and brakes. The handle bars are original along with grips, pedals, and rear slick. Someone told us that this was a '68, then someone else told us it was an after-market reproduction. Can anyone tell us how much it is worth?

From what I remeber reading, there were only one of two original Grape Krates made. If yours is original, it's probably worth quite a lot of money. I would suggest that you ask you question in the Stingray note instead of this one. They're the experts on Krates.

Sounds like you may be feeling a bit of "buyer's remorse". Well, don't worry.
There are a number of things that will determine what type of investment you have made. There was some discussion on
this very topic about a month ago under the "Balloon Tire" discussion topic..... First, how long is the timeframe you are looking at?
If it is 10 years, and Schwinn pumps out another 10,000 "limited edition" Phantoms, and they make another 10,000 Spacelanders, then you probably
won't get much of a return. At 15 or 20 years under those conditions, things look better. But if Schwinn truly does limit production, and Bowden doesn't pump out
a lot of bikes, you'll do fine in 10 years. There are a lot of other factors, too. Are you going to ride them? Hang them up somewhere? Keep them in the box? If you keep them in the
box for 10 years, they'll be worth more. But if you assemble and ride occasionally, and polish and enjoy the bikes, you might not get
that much $$ in the end, but you will have gotten your money's worth through the many hours of just enjoying the bike. How can you put a price on that? Also, riding around on a unique bike, you'll meet
a bunch of interesting folks and get a good feeling that just cannot be measured in bux.

I was doing some shopping for a turn-of-the-century bike this past summer. I found that pre-1897 safeties (looks like bikes made today) are generally well made, collectable, and worth $500+ unrestored. In 1896-97 the department stores started entering the market, so you have to watch the quality. Those bikes go for $200-1500 unrestored depending on condition, original quality, and completeness. Indian, Columbia, Iver Johnson and some other big name brands are worth more. Features like shaft drive (chainless), fancy suspension designs, fancy paint & pinstriping, etc will increase the value as well. There were a lot of bikes made in the 1890-1910 bicycle boom years due to the fact that adults used these bikes for mobility as well as entertainment. Velodromes (oval indoor racetracks) were built in major cities and six day, 24 hours a day races with associated betting was very popular. After 1910, people in the US began losing interest in bicycles as commuting vehicles and began concentrating on motorcycles and the new 'horseless carriages'. In the 1920's, bicycles began looking more like motorcycles of the period without engines. To summarize, turn-of-the-century bicycles are worth at least $200 for the worst basket case and could be worth thousands depending on rareity, desireability, interesting features, and condition.

Recently my uncle gave me a Goodyear Hi Way Patrol
bike in original condition. It has rust but is all original.
It has a odd springer front end. He told me it is from
the 30's. I can't find a picture of it. It does not have a tank
or front head light. Do you know what year this might be or what the value
is? The front sprocket is not a skip tooth. I thought if
is very collectable I will have it professionally restored.
The paint is pretty far gone. The tires are original "lightning"
tires with two indian heads on each. They are in good condition.
