Recently, he's been wearing some rather severe looks. In Outbreak, he towers over Dustin Hoffman in army boots and a bright orange military cut. His haircut in The Usual Suspects was described very appropriately by one critic as "a question mark" - director Bryan Singer simply described it as "geeky". How much more extreme could it get? You might check out his appearance as John Doe in Seven...someone remarked that he looked like Ben Kingsley playing Gandhi, but I wonder...could he be shooting for the "sexy bald Captain" look?
Does he like to cook? If so, how about sharing a couple of his favorite recipes? What kind of music does he like? Favorite musical performers/composers? What does he like to read for fun? What does he do to relax (especially on location)? To keep in shape? Does he like to go out dancing? Does he like MST 3K ? Favorite movies (OK, besides Lawrence of Arabia)? Favorite playwrights? Ever consider writing, himself? What does he imagine he'd be doing if he weren't in "show biz"? Does he play any musical instruments? Who does he trust to do all that stuff to his hair, anyway? Having worked so many times with Jack Lemmon, does he consider him to be a mentor? What's the most important thing he's learned from Lemmon? What does he consider to be his worst vice? Boxers, or briefs ;-) ?
Mel's funeral on Wiseguy reminded us an awful lot of Levi's in the movie Rocket Gibraltar, in which Kevin had a role in just previously to doing Wiseguy. This wasn't a coincidence, was it?
Nothing too personal. I read that he doesn't "surf the 'net" and will have to be brought into the 20th Century "kicking and screaming" (though, with him getting into directing, where technology surrounds the process, I don't believe his protest for a minute!)...we may never know the answer to these and many other mysteries...
E-mail me with your questions, and I'll add them
(or any answers, it goes without saying...:-) ) here.
Indeed, Kevin does like to shake a leg. While filming "A Time to Kill", apparently he and co-star Sandra Bullock went out dancing in Jackson, and at the cast party, it's rumored that he showed fellow cast members Bullock and Oliver Platt his favorite salsa moves from the big club number in The Mask. Apparently on Entertainment Tonight, Sandra Bullock said that she found Kevin to be charismatic and sexy, and "a spicy, fiery little dancer". (Well!) And it's well known that he would very much like to do a musical - he lost out to Nathan Lane auditioning for Guys and Dolls, and was seen joking with Emma Thompson at the Golden Globes about doing a revival of Mary Poppins....
Rumor has it that Mr. Spacey will be starring in a remake of the classic Twelve Angry Men, presumably in the Fonda role - we'll have to see how this one pans out. Another has him set to appear on Sesame Street.
What's he really like? Posts on Usenet and AOL from people who have met Mr. Spacey all make a point of how gracious he is to his fans. They have met him during appearances, or after a performance, or as they worked with him in films. They say is that he is smart, focused, funny, patient, and, above all, nice.
As an example, on the set of A Time to Kill, one young woman, a local high-school student appearing in the film as an extra, claims she was rescued from a scary situation by Kevin, when a man accosted her behind a sound stage. Observing her plight, he promptly had the intruder escorted off the lot.
Finally, there are the rumors concerning Kevin's stage name. There are a few potential sources offered for the name "Spacey". One line of conjecture says it was his grandfather's name. The fact that one of his favorite actors is Spencer Tracy leads to conjecture about some sort of contraction of the names. My favorite theory (alas, untrue) says that "Spacey" was a high school nickname, because he was a bit of a...cadet - hence the title for this page - it's such a cute story we might wish it were true. The truth behind the matter is that while he was known to his friends in high school as Kevin Fowler, his parents divorced and he took his mother's maiden name, Spacey, as his stage name. (That is, folks, the rumor that it was his grandfather's name is then true!) Of course, then there are the rumors about his middle name, and as far as I know the truth has yet to come out on that one! :-)
