Microsoft Web Server Uses Linux and Apache
On
June 15, a visit to linus.microsoft.com
revealed that Microsoft is using Apache,
a competing web server software to their own Internet Information Server
(IIS), and Linux, a competing operating
system to Microsoft Windows to serve their web site. What was shown was
the standard welcoming page once an Apache/RedHat Linux server is set up.
As several people discovered the site, Microsoft must have realized that
they'd been discovered. Although linus.microsoft.com was pingable for awhile,
it was eventually shut down. The next day, a visit to monkeywrench.microsoft.com
revealed the same page. Again, Microsoft shut down that address. Microsoft
still probably uses Linux and Apache, although they've covered up their
tracks.
I myself found out about the page in an anti-Microsoft discussion group
which can be found at www.enemy.org.
It turns out that an
article was later posted in InfoWorld which dedicates a paragraph to
the discovery by this group.
