HUNTING LIGHTHOUSE

Hunting Island, South Carolina

DESCRIPTION:
Hunting Lighthouse

Traveling North on Route 95 we were making good time, so we decided to take a detour and do some site seeing. We turned off and headed East for Hunting Island.

The first few miles were fun, but soon that feeling of the unknown road miles from home started to sink in. It began to feel like it would take longer to get there. The family started asking were are you taking us, and how much longer?

" Soon, Soon, don't worry".

Farm land gave way to a town. The town gave way to marsh land. We were getting closer. The rest of the family was ready to mutiny and turn back as I drove off though the marsh past the oyster boats.
They were hot.
We were close.
Just a few more minutes (I hoped).

We left the marsh and entered into the lush woodlands of the island. As we drove through the wildlife preserve everyone had there heads out the window looking up fora glimpse of the lighthouse. And then without warning it was there, towering above us, up through the trees. The white tower with its black top stood starkly against the green trees and blue sky. The sun was high and strong. We parked near the lighthouse and walked over.

The lighthouse grounds are defined by a white picket fence, tuckedinto a corner of the woods. Between the ocean and the lighthouse is a wooded picnic area. Unfortunately the day we arrived thelighthouse was closed to the public. It was very hot and humid so the rest of the family went for a walk on the beach while I took a few pictures. This became a challenge because the moment I stood still to compose a picture my hands and face were immediately attacked by mosquito. - lots of misquotes.

On the way out we passed a small pond which had an odd pipe running into it. I got out and walked over to get a closer look. I then realized that it was the tail to a huge alligator. I turned togo back to a car I saw another sunning itself just 5 feet away from were I was standing.

"That was a really nice place, I would like to come back and spend some more time someday." I heard from the backseat. As I drove off the island past the oyster boats, scratchingthe mosquito bites on my hands and face.

After our visit to Hunting Island I tried to convince my family to take a right hand turn of 21 and go up route 17 to Charleston.
It was a unanimous objection. I would have liked to have seen Charleston.
They wanted to see home.

NEAREST LIGHTHOUSES:
North: Charleston, South Carolina, The remains of a grand old lighthouse off the coast of Folly Beach. I have not seen this lighthouse yet. The last information I have is that the weather beaten brick tower is standing off the coast in shallow water.
(I Would appreciate it if anyone has current information if there is still anything left standing to be seen.)
UPDATE: I did receive an e-mail that the lighthouse tower is still there standing of the coast. South: Hilton Head, South Carolina
