For over 130 years, the Cape May lighthouse has sent its beacon of light out across the entrance of the Delaware Bay, providing safe passage for ships on their way up the Delaware River.
The 170 foot tall brick tower, topped by a red lantern room, overlooks the beaches and marshes of New Jersey's southern most tip.
Walking the 218 steps to the top, you cannot help putting yourself in the shoes of the lighthouse keeper, doing your job in keeping the lantern lit.
Excitement builds as you reach the top and step out onto the balcony for your reward, the view. The salty air blows through you hair while you circle the lantern room on the outside balcony and in the distance you spy the town of Cape May. Standing there much as it did 100 years ago, not unlike the view the keeper himself saw. You wonder how often the lighthouse keeper stood there wishing to go into town. And as you walk down the stairs to go back into town you feel a certain relief inside that you don't have to do this several times a day, every day. |

A visit to the Cape May lighthouse is a worthwhile and rewarding visit because Cape May has so much to offer.
Go swimming, deep sea fishing, boating, horseback riding, whale
watching or antique shopping. At the lighthouse, take the nature walk through the coastal marsh. This is a major location for migrating birds to stop over in the spring and fall. Stay in a historic Bed and Breakfast Inn while visiting one of the largest collections of Victorian era homes in the United States. Collect Cape May diamonds at Sunset Beach and see the cement ship (what is left anyway). If you manage to do everything there is to do in Cape May, or need to change gears for whirlwind speed, the amusement piers of nearby Wildwood are the ticket. Make your reservations early, even in winter. |
