Dietary Measures for Fertility and Conception
This list is some of the miscellaneous diet measures that can be taken for fertility. These are not herbs; those are listed on the Herbs for Fertility page.
- Calcium and Magnesium are thought to be the most important minerals affecting conception and pregnancy maintenance in women.
- Low levels of PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) have been found in women with difficulty conceiving. Increasing the amounts shows increased success in conception, but dosage information could not be obtained. Please check with a health care provider.
- Vitamin E is supposed to have a profound effect on fertility in men and women. 500 to 1500 IU taken daily by male partners for several months prior to conception has been shown to prevent birth defects (in couples who have already had a child born of birth defects).
- Vitamin A is said to be a traditional remedy among native people for women who are having difficulty conceiving.
Most of this information was obtained from Joy Gardner's Healing Yourself during Pregnancy and Susun Weed's Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year. More information about these dietary measures can be obtained these or from other herbal books, and as always, be sure to check with your healthcare provider before beginning any dietary regimen.
