What is T'ai Chi
Many people have asked this question as they have observed groups
of people enjoyably performing T'ai Chi's various exercises, or
smoothly stepping the formal T'ai Chi sequences. T'ai Chi is an 800
year old exercise system rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and
Chinese martial arts. Its proper name is T'ai Chi Ch'uan (Taijiquan).
People call it T'ai Chi (Taiji) for convenience. T'ai Chi is best
known for it's exceptional health benefits, its relaxed fluid, and
graceful manner, its safety, and the unique T'ai Chi approach to self
defense.
As a part of Traditional Chinese medicine, T'ai Chi is concerned
with the overall energy patterns of living being. It has long been
noted that these patterns are related to health and well being.
Illness prevention and healthful living are emphasized, and when
illness occurs, treatment focuses on correcting imbalances reflected
in the energy pattern. Attention is given to a person's mental and
physical condition.
Health Benefits
T'ai Chi is renowned for its safety, adaptability, and suitability
for people of all ages, conditions and body types. T'ai Chi includes
the benefits of other exercises like heart health, aerobic benefits,
improved Blood pressure, strong bones, calorie burn, and diabetes
relief. Further, a number of scientific research has shown that
beyond these benefits T'ai Chi has some special benefits such as
Improved Balance, Emotional Well Being, Improved Breathing, Stress
Relief, and Arthritis Relief. Greg Mucci's published laboratory
research on physiological effects of T'ai Chi was one of the earliest
scientific studies of T'ai Chi in the western world. Want to see Dr.

How Does T'ai Chi
work?
T'ai Chi exercise creates a relaxed but alert condition. This
condition increases the exercises' benefits, enhances healing, and
relieves stress. Both mental and physical at the same time, the
exercises come with recommended mental focuses. The first part of a
mental focus is simply noticing the forms of the exercises and the
sensations they generate. That is, one pays direct attention to one's
natural energy. Next, the mental atmosphere is filled out by being
aware of the exercise names, and the concepts which go with the
exercises. As one becomes more aware of one's energy, and when one is
aware of the concepts of the exercises, one can regulate the energy,
notice imbalances before they become major problems, and even correct
pre-existing imbalances
What about T'ai Chi Self
Defense
T'ai Chi self defense stems directly from one's awareness of one's
personal energy. When one becomes keenly aware of one's own energy he
can proceed to develop sensitivity to another person's energy. Using
vision and touch, one learns to instantly sense or feel the intent to
attack and to escape, or to neutralize and counter the attack before
it has fully developed. These skills are trained by mean of enjoyable
2 person games (push hands). Methods taught to develop this awareness
are Push hands and the 2 person form San Sou. For More Information on

Some Background on Greg
Mucci
Born in 1947, Greg was gradually deafened throughout
his teens and adulthood. Meniere's disease also left Greg with a
seriously impaired sense of balance. In 1970, he started practicing
T'ai Chi seeking to improve his balance and to emotionally cope with
his illness. Thanks to the gracious teaching efforts of Mr. Robert
Cheng and Col. Wm. J.R. Chung, Greg has realized many of T'ai Chi's
benefits. He has been teaching since 1974. His method are based on
the Classical Yang Style of T'ai Chi Ch'uan taught by Mr. Cheng. Like
