First Thanksgiving

Colonial York - designated the official First Capital of the United States, was the selected as the location for the founding fathers to hold the Continental Congress. York was selected after the occupation of Philadelphia by the British. The Continental Congress conducted many activities while regrouping in York. The first thanksgiving was proclaimed in York.

General Horatio Gates House

The Gates House (c. 1751) commemorates both the Revolutionary War hero and the Continental Congress's stay in York, during the British occupation of Philadelphia. General Gates (1727-1805) hero of the Battle of Saratoga occupied this English style stone house while attending the Continental Congress. The second floor banquet room is said to have been the site of Lafayette's famous toast to Washington, which signaled the French support of Washington (the Conway Cabal).

Golden Plough Tavern

The Golden Plough Tavern (c. 1741) takes us back to the time when York was a tiny village on the edge of the Pennsylvania wilderness. The tavern housed travellers and local citizens. This is the oldest surviving structure in York.

The Murals of York

York is beginning an exciting new project thoughout the downtown district. Walls that were once vacant will be filled with images of York history. Murals are being planned for many of the available walls. Artists will be painting some during the "River Walk Arts Festival" in August 1996.

Industrial Museum of York County

A wonderful stop on the tour, the Industrial Museum of York County provides visitors with a unique opportunity to see Industrial Equipment in a historic manufacturing facility.


Codorus Creek Bike Path

If you are tired of the "Walking" tour, you may want to take a cool bike ride along the Codorus Bike Path.


Codorus Boat Basin

After your long walk, enjoy the tranquil setting of the Codorus Boat Basin. The site of many water related events, the Boat launch offers boaters access to this section of the Codorus.


Central Market

Don't Miss out on this place. Open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This is one of the great things about living in the York area. The Central market provides visitors and citizens with a wide variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses, bread and everything else you can think of.
