LJ #44: Using Linux to Teach UNIX System Administration - This article was written to describe some of the issues involved in training a system administrator in an academic environment.   This is based on my experience with teaching UNIX Administration at the College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, IL.

Books I've Written

UNIX System Administrator's Interactive Workbook  - This book will is the first books  in a series that  are designed to train the UNIX System Administrator in a hands on  interactive format. It require's a minimum amount of login as the system administrator or root.  Many exercises can be done by a regular user, thus making it ideal for use in an academic environment where root access is usually prevented.

Linux Network Administrator's Interactive Workbook: 1/e - This book is written to get a user up and running as quickly as possible in a networked environment. The focus is on doing the basics and on understanding these basics.

Books I've Co-authored

Caldera OpenLinux and Netfinity Server Integration Guide, 1/e

SuSE Linux and Netfinity Server Integration Guide: 1/e

Red Hat Linux and Netfinity Server Integration Guide: 1/e

Comments About My UNIX Admin Book

"Joe recently completed his first instructional book on Unix, which was published under the Prentice-Hall label. The book is doing very well, and is an excellent instructional aid for those of you wanting to learn more about Unix shell scripts or how to use CRON to automate execution of shell scripts. It's a quick read - all 588 pages of it!!! For those of you not inclined to snuggle up by the fire with a good Unix book, you should at least take a look at the forward - you'll learn all sorts of things about our resident author that will surprise and amaze you! Good luck with the next book (Son of Unix), Joe!!!"
