The Whole Story

Deer Season 1994

This year I got my deer four days before the season ended. I shot my best buck ever. It had seven points and weighed 123 pounds.

I was very lucky to get this deer.
First of all, my brother had missed him during the muzzleoader season. Then, on the day I shot him with my bow, he walked by me twice. The first time, I couldn't get a shot because he "appeared" in front of me, leaving no time for a good shot. I tried to go after him by trying to make him think I was another deer. I tried grunting & stomping. He looked my way, but after about a ten minute stand-off, he left. As he walked away, I made him think he scared me off. I ran away with the cadence of a deer, trying to sound like a frightened deer, until I was 100 or more yards away. I never saw the deer again that morning.

Nine hours later he came by again, but this time I was ready. He came out on the exact trail as in the morning and was so kind as to stop right in my shooting lane. I made a 15 yard shot right through the heart and lungs. He immediately ran into some very tall grass. After verifying a hit and recovering my arrow, I thought I'd walk out to the two-track and see if he made it that far, rather than try to track him through the tall grass. When I got to the two-track, I saw something strange sticking out of the grass about 100 yds away. I picked up my binoculars and looked at the object and all I could see was antlers. I cautiously approached and once I was a few feet away, I knew the buck was dead.
All this happened less than ten minutes after the shot.

This was my seventh buck and eleventh deer. I had his skull processed using the "Beetle method". There is a picture to see. Check it out.
I have been bowhunting for 14 years.
