Morels are fungal treasures. The morels you see above I found in my yard the last week of May 1995. They are white morels. Morels can also be black.
You can tell a good morel from a bad one by the fact that the stem of the morel is connected to the cap. As always though when picking mushrooms, have someone who knows show you what they look like, or consult a good field guide. If you are unsure, DO NOT EAT!!
These were found on a south facing slope under some pine trees. Morels can also be found in old orchards, oak woods, or in the grass. Once you find a spot, it is likely that morels will come up again there the next year. Remember where it is, AND DON'T TELL A SOUL.
Morels have a very rich mushroomy flavor. I like to saute in butter. They can also be dried to preserve them.
