Possibly the greatest science fiction writer of all time, it is less well known that Asimov was also a prolific writer of books on science, history and religion. In fact his output has been so prodigious that it is difficult to find a subject on which he has not expressed an opinion somewhere.
Asimov was born near Smolensk in Russia in the town of Petrovichi in 1920, however, his family emigrated to the USA when he was just three years old, and he grew up in Brooklyn. Asimov became an American Citizen just five years later at the age of eight.
It seems that he was blessed with a prodigious memory, and this together with a love of reading, meant that he soon made his mark in the academic world. He graduated from high school at the age of 15, and went on to study chemistry at Columbia State University. He returned to Columbia after serving in the US Army during World War II, where he gained his Doctorate. From 1949 he taught Biochemistry at Boston University Medical School.
His writing career of both fiction and non fiction works started early. His first published work of science fiction appeared in the SF magazine 'Amazing Stories' when he was just 19, and he soon became a regular contributor to that and other publications of the day. His first novel 'Pebble in the Sky' was published in 1950, whilst his first non fiction work, a text book on biochemistry was published in 1953.
By 1958 his writing career was so well established that he was able to give up his position at Boston, to concentrate full time on his writing. His list of published works ( some 500 + titles ) is so extensive that there is no room for it here, however, if you are new to Asimov, then you can do no better than to start with his world beating 'Foundation' series. Read them in any order you like, as each book is complete in itself. The series as a whole, now extending to some eight works, tells us the 'history of the future', and stands as possibly the greatest science fiction series of all time. A list and review is included later.
On the other hand, if you are already familiar with the science fiction works of Isaac Asimov, then we have included a selected list of non-fiction works for you to browse through.
