A Fundraiser and Celebration for the
Wadastick Gullah Sea Island Artists and Scholars Residency
In the 1520s Africans came to the New World. They entered through the marsh strewn landings of the Sea Islands and other parts of the eastern shoreline. As these Africans were brought over to work for free to establish this “new colony” for Europeans, the captors had no idea of the richness that these Africans would add to this soil. The amalgamation of various African languages, cultural and spiritual expressions, skills, and crafts became what is now called “Gullah.” The Gullah and Geechee people still dwell on the Sea Islands and throughout the Lowcountry.
From the Pee Dee River west and down the Sea Islands in the Atlantic Ocean Africans and indigenous American people formed their own settlements together and side-by-side. Just as their indigenous/Native American kinsfolk used the “wada stick” to find healing and nourturing sources, the Gullahs and Geechees are now using WADASTICK to rejoin their people.
Originally there was no North and South Carolina, only the Carolinas. The Wadastick Gullah Sea Island Residency and WADASTICK Residency in Laural Hill, NC now seeks to reconnect this soil and the people by giving artists, scholars, and the community the opportunity to explore various expressions of the arts and history of this region. We welcome you to join us in celebrating this reconnection:

“The Art-ivist,” Marquetta L. Goodwine
and the
Gullah Cunneckshun
Proceeds will benefit WADASTICK Artists Residency and Cultural Center.
