Goodwine who is a historian and artist defines herself as an "art-ivist." Early this year, Goodwine celebrated the release of "The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery" in which she wrote the entries on Gullah, Gullah Jack, Denmark Vesey, and the Sea Islands. This book is a powerful resource given that it is the first to focus completely on the subject of enslavement of people globally throughout the ages. It is also a unique work in that many of the scholars wrote about subjects that also pertained to their personal heritage. Goodwine is extremely proud that her suggestion to make sure that the Sea Islands were properly represented was taken.
Clarity Press, Inc. contacted Goodwine in regard to a Gullah anthology which will accurately present the situation in and the history of the Gullah community. Goodwine and the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition provided on-going assistance with this work. As a result, Goodwine was selected to be the editor of "Legacy of Ibo Landing."
The release of "The Legacy of Ibo Landing" was celebrated on Saturday, May 23, 1998. This work is in tribute to the strong and surviving spirits of the Gullahs and Geechees of the Sea Islands. Hence, the title is in dedication to a group that epitomized that spirit, the Ibos. A group of these Africans walked back into the waters off St. Simon's Island instead of being enslaved. They walked back to Africa. There is no marker at their point of departure to commemorate this yet. However, the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition intends to work with all parties concerned to accomplish this.
