Gary's Astronomy Homework Help reference book

Main Index Page

By Gary Agranat

This is what remains of my astronomy tutoring website. I maintained it between 1997 and about 2004. Some pages were completely revised in late 2006. But I no longer keep the website up to date.

I am now deeply involved in interdisciplinary research. That includes history of science, psychology & culture, and contrasts between East and West. Although that research touches very deeply on aspects of astronomy, physics, and math, I am unable to keep up to date with current astrophysics and planetary science work. Much of the material here is probably still usable. Therefore, I have tried to reduce the scope of the website so that it can remain online without much further work from me.

This website was originally created to function like a specialized library index for students researching astronomy topics. Back in 1997 I was very disappointed with the quality of many astronomy websites that were coming out. I also was disappointed that many students seemed to settle for low quality presentations. I could see for myself that, if one knew enough about what to look for, some very useful and interesting information at the frontier of the field could be found. I also could see that most professional scientists didn't have the time to develop good index websites themselves. And so I created this website. I was particularly keen to link to discussions by researchers in the field about their work.

There are some pages which I still would like to rewrite. Also, some of the older pages still have many links which are out of date. When I can give the time, I'll gradually take care of those pages.

At heart, all acts of education are a sharing of experience. The development of your own experience is an important part of that sharing!

ASTRONOMY HOMEWORK HELP
Resource pages for researching astronomy topics on the Internet
  • General Astronomy Resources
Websites which broadly cover many topics of astronomy. The page is organized according to Beginner/Introductory, Intermediate/Early Undergraduate, and Advanced levels.
  • The Solar System and Planetary Science
When I have a chance I will rewrite this as a smaller, easier to use section. For now, I am letting the old pages remain up.
  • The Sun
Some introductory websites about the nature of the Sun. Then websites which probe more deeply into solar physics research.
  • Stars & the Milky Way
Stellar astrophysics. Understanding stars and how they create the character of our galaxy, The Milky Way.
  • Galaxies
Websites which introduce our understanding to date about galaxies. Basic to intermediate college level.
  • Some Special Topics:
Black Holes, Relativity, Cosmology, Dark Matter & Dark Energy, Gravitational Lensing, Extra Solar Planets
  • Arecibo Exobiology - Life in the Universe
    Quite a few links.
  • Observing the Sky
Links about understanding astronomy observation by eye: sky coordinates based on how the Earth moves, eclipses, constellations, comets, asteroids and meteors. This page needs to be rewritten.
  • Time & Navigation
Some links about how astronomy has been used for reckoning time and the calendar, and for navigation.
Some older pages with probably more out-of-date links:
Additional Features:

The Early Space Age in Stamps
Stamps and Stories about
the Beginning of the Space Age
