This web site has two main purposes. First, it is intended as a way for folks to get to know me better in cyberspace and, second, as a way for me to share my interests with others. In attempting to achieve both purposes, I have created a personal site on the Web. Thus, this site is first and foremost about me: Who I am, what I've done, what I'm interested in, what I think about things that interest me and who I know and admire.
Many visitors to my site are people who have met or know me outside of cyberspace. Many of those people are new to the Net. This may well be the first homepage they ever visit. For them I offer the observation that the "Web Homepage" is a new literary genre, a combination thumbnail autobiography and personal bibliography, offered to the public as an evolving work-in-progress. To fully appreciate the genre, Web novices should utilize the hyperlinks as much as possible: The homepage is just that, a place from which to start and to which one can comfortably return, but it is not intended to be a self-contained world all to itself. The links reveal as much about the author as the original content found within the "Homesite" itself.
As my web site has grown I have occasionally had feedback in the form of "This site sure is big! Where do you find the time to do this?" In response, I note that I have always been a writer and that the work of Web publishing is, after all, mainly writing. During most periods of my adult life I have written a lot; professional technical writing, correspondence, essays, fiction and the occasional bit of verse. Starting in 1995, I began teaching myself how to format my writing in HTML (the code for Web documents and other files), a task no more difficult than learning to use a new word processor. I've also always had a graphic bent, having spent a good deal of my youth drawing and still doodling incessantly and entertaining the dream of some day doing a little real architectural design. These days, HTML editors and computer graphics tools are as easy to use as any other, and once you master the basics, Web publishing is only very slightly more complex than simply saving a file on your own personal computer. So the answer to how this site has grown is that it is simply the natural outgrowth of what I have always been doing. Maintaining and adding to this site is just one of my hobbies, an on-going project on which I may spend a couple of hours a week. I hope you enjoy the result.
