METRICATION WILL BE BETTER REGULATED, AN UNWANTED BURDEN WILL BE LIFTED

The British Weights and Measures Association is delighted to learn that the Government's Better Regulation Task Force will give priority to addressing concerns about weights and measures and metrification.

The British Weights & Measures Association, which is committed to removing the criminal law from metrification, is, however, concerned that the working group on consumer law is headed by the Operations Director of Marks & Spencer.

Marks & Spencer is intent on enforcing metrication for its own benefit and at the expense of other retailers and small businesses who are resisting it and suffering from the high cost of conversion.

Consumers are also overwhelmingly against a metric monopoly. A survey of 3,780 shoppers showed only 6% want complete metrication.

The BWMA has submitted evidence to the Better Regulation Task Force. The research report, "A FAIR MEASURE", showed the overwhelming desire of small businesses and consumers to remove the criminal law from metrication and to restore freedom of choice between Imperial measures and metric.
