EASTERN DIVISION - SECOND DISTRICT

This district basically formed a cuttoff for the First District. It was not constructed as such but it did allow for a reduction in mileage. This was the route of the Super Chief/ El Capitan as well as other streamliners. The depots on this route were mostly garden varitey Santa Fe frame standards but of course there wre exceptions such as Kansas City's handsome Union Station. There is some speculation that Olathe had a brick depot. Ottawa Junction had a tower/ depot for years. After the Junction was reworked the tower was removed and a modern depot was built in its place. The original two story stone Southern Kansas depot was just off of downtown on third district trackage.

The line is still very important today in the freight business. However, Amtrak's Southwest Chief bypasses the majority of the route leaving the line at Holliday for the First District and Topeka.. Timetable from November 29, 1942
