This depot represents an unusual twist on the county seat depot plan. While stucco application is not unusual the brick showing through on the corners was unusual. The design of the open waiting room was also unique. The decorative ridge along the roof line of the open waiting room was not to be found on any other Santa Fe depot. The unusually ornate mission cross logo above the office bay window was also rare. An unusual application of the name "Santa Fe" on the streetside of the depot was also rare. Pratt Kansas has a similar style font on its streetside office bay window.

This depot has not weathered well. The open waiting room is even moreso today as a the roof is missing. The tasteful wooden freight room has been removed and replaced with a less attractive Sears sided storage room. The ex-freight room from a distance appeared to be a part of the stucco structure.

The depot is now an interesting museum. It is also the stopping point for several Topeka Railroad Days excursion trains during the Labor Day event. Although it was not a major passenger stop, it would have been interesting to see the modern Super Chief pass by this attractive structure.
