Burlingame Kansas was the junction point for the Alma branch. The Alma branch was abandoned from Manhattan to Alma in 1898. The line from Alma to Burlingame lasted until February 13, 1973.

At one time this depot was the oldest remaining on the railroad. It was built in 1868. The depot's waiting room was turned into a railroad museum. Strangely the depot was cut in half, moved offsite, and remodeled in to an "L" shape. In later years it was used as a nightclub. It sat vacant for several years and burned in 1997. So ends the story of this often photographed depot. Frank Ellington documented the depot in his book Santa Fe Depots of the Plains. Other photos exist including a color photo trackside in Joe McMillian's Wheat Lines and Super Freights on page 29 and in John McCall's rare book The Doodlebugs.
