Covering two-thirds of the Grand Canyon National Park, beginning in the west as Marble Canyon to Lake Mead and including the Kaibab National Forest, the North Rim is as isolated as the South Rim is commercialized. Add a few feet of snow in the winter months and closed highways, and this destination becomes downright inaccessible. Unlike the South Rim, the North rim is only open to the public for part of the year starting in late May and running through middle October. (If you're planning a visit to the Grand Canyon by automobile during the "shoulder" months, give us a call and we'll let you know if the roads are open.) It is possible to explore the area by snowmobile by contacting Doo Powell located in nearby Page, Arizona.
The main activity on the North Rim is centered around the historic Grand Canyon Lodge where the majority of the tourist-season visitors stop to shop. The lodge was built and opened to the public in 1928 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Jacob Lake is located just 32 miles north of park entrance and is open year round. Restaurants, service stations, gift shops and a small grocery store are all located at Jacob Lake.
