The Lacquered Box
Teleplay: Maurice Hurley; Director: Paul Lynch

In the flashback, we see Caine renovating the burned-out brownstone from the pilot, and Peter attempting to come to terms with his father's reappearance. The "lacquered box" of the title is a small lacquered box containing a cricket - for luck - the Ancient attempts to give Caine as a welcome to the community. The Ancient's granddaughter is stopped by would-be crime lord Clarence. Clarence then arranges for a bomb to be placed in the brownstone. Caine finds the bomb and opens the lid; the bomb is set to go off if he closes the lid; assuming the stories about Shaolin are true, Clarence has also arranged for a timer in the bomb. Peter comes into the brownstone to find his father kneeling on the floor holding up the box lid. Peter attempts to disarm the bomb, and after he is successful, he goes after Clarence. Peter is set up by two crooked cops (Tollis and his partner) and shot up with a combination of cocaine and heroine by Clarence in order to get him and Caine out of the way so Clarence can take over the void left by Tan's departure. Their plan is to destroy not only Peter, but his reputation, and Caine by extension. Caine saves Peter, taking him back to his home in the brownstone, where he nurses him. Once Peter recovers from the narcotic and Caine's kwoon opens, Peter gives Caine the ceremonial knife he retrieved from the ashes of the Temple as a child. The Chinese community then joins them to give Caine gifts of welcome, including a lacquered box containing a cricket. In the present, Peter recovers from his wounds, and Caine presents him with a lacquered box - containing a cricket - of his own.
