WESTERN DIVISION - MANTER DISTRICT

This is Saunders, Kansas. There is little here other than a few grain elevators; some old, some modern, and the towns railroad sign. This is a very tranquil place. One can hear the breeze blowing in the grass and the banging of the old metal panels on the antique grain elevator. The sound of a car passing between Kansas and Colorado occasionally breaks the scerenity. The remoteness of this area of the United States is evident in this photograph. Note the absence of even a single tree. This is life in western Kansas. There is a certain beauty in this land.

The Santa Fe doesn't run on the Manter district anymore. However, just imagine a time not so long ago in late May or early June when the golden waves of wheat are being harvested in the gentle breeze of late spring. Farmers bring their harvest to these lonely grain elevators in their white fords with red beds. It is a bustling place for a time which is all too short in early spring. Lumbering blue and yellow locomotives arrive with empty grain cars to take this bounty to market. This is the Manter District built in the 1920's.

This is one of several mystery depots on this page. This depot is located just south of Springfield, CO. There are no identifying marks. If you know the true identity of this depot please let me know.

This is a closeup of the depot's name. My guess is that it is Pritchett.
