NESS CITY, KANSAS

Ness City was an important point on this branch line. Note that the daily except Sunday mixed trains met here. The Santa Fe thought enough of this location to keep its depot standing until the end of Class I service on the route. In fact in the Santa Fe video SANTA FE Snow Blowing in Kansas the rotary tied up here for repairs and the crew went to the local beanery. The Central Kansas was still using this depot in 1993 when this photo was taken.

Passenger schedule November 29, 1942.

s 12:30 pm ex-Su No. 69 Westward Mixed from Great Bend to Scott City
s 12:30 pm ex-Su No. 70 Eastward Mixed to Great Bend from Scott City

The Ness City depot was a typical board and batten 1893 standard. The freight end of the depot was converted into a garage for Maintenance of Way equipment. The passenger room is completely empty but the office looks well used. An earlier view of this depot can be seen in Wheat Lines and Super Freights on page 75. That photo shows the Santa Fe Snow Plow on an earlier visit to Ness City in February of 1979.
