Halstead is a sleepy little bedroom community north-west of Wichita and west of Newton. It does not see much rail activity these days. Today Amtrak passes by the station late at night and early in the morning and a few freights use these rails. In 1942 however it was busy. No less than sixteen trains passed by this beautiful station.

There are several unique features to Halstead's depot. Most notably the color of the brick is a deep brown rather than the red used in most brick Santa Fe depots. In addition note the chimney attached to the freight section and the name spelled out vertically. The depot is remotely similar to Lyons Kansas with its pitched roof over the office bay. The depot was under restoration when I took these photographs. Joe McMillian's Wheat Lines and Super Freights shows a photo of this depot with its front windows covered in plywood on page 65.
