Dodge City, home of Boot Hill and Wyatt Earp and modern western myth. There isn't much in Dodge City that would remind one of the wild west. For gosh sake the roads are paved! However the Santa Fe presence here is unmistakeable. There is a large yard here and the grand depot/ Harvey House on the main east west drag through town. The neon sign on the depot proclaims S a n t a F e. It is truely one of those sites that is a Santa Fe classic. Amtrak's Southwest Chief stops in Dodge City at the old depot. It is a shame that only the single east and single westbound daily passenger trains call on this depot. If you look closely you can still see the ghosts of Harvey Girls, travel weary passengers, troop trains, Pullman sleepers, and sleek streamliners. It would be interesting to open a few rooms in this old structure to restore a piece of the Harvey Legacy as a bed and breakfast.
Page 70, 71, and 84 of Joe McMillian's Wheat Lines and Super Freights shows several different views of the depot and facilites around the yard.
