here, there & everywhere... ElectronicA, electronic-Ah... well, well... in this issue we've decided to cover some of this brand new & exciting style of muzik...(kraftwerk 1972... anyone?,) just like EVERY issue! ...eh? Seriously, kidz we're just getting started. At the risk of sounding,... well just "sounding off" actually, The first issue of DAMn! debut'd with that declaration back in May of '95 and just now have allot of others finally caught up to speed... & we couldn't be happier! A bit of a historical (hysterical?) perspective is in order, though...
Check out our page on two of electro's hottest acts & we aint talkin' Prodigy & Chemical Bros... it's Orbital (whom I originally covered in early '93 for the now defunct CONSUMABLE zine, way back when...) & old-skool-styled neu-B's Emperion... also some of INDUSTRIALs new innovators with Covenant + more! For the GOTH in us all we have our own coverage ov the SISTERS scandal, opps ...er, 'concert' in Philadelipha (of ALL places [!]) this past spring... teamed up with fellow- goths Faith & The Muse ....read on! --- SHRED [by the Sea]
We've been neglecting the bands for a while now, so its time you heard about some band information from the depths of the Megalopolis:The Bytes: Rumors say that the Clay People have been approached by and/or signed to Slipdisc, home to 13mg and N17... Uranium 235's debut cd should be out soon on Germany's SPV, or one of the many subsidiaries... NYC's Neuroplague have licensed their album Alter to Zoth Ommog for Europe... PA-based THD have been released from their Hard Records contract (apparently Hard have jettisoned ALL of their "industrial" bands, saying they don't bring in enough money and are now focusing on synthpop!), and have signed to the also PA based Pendragon Records... the only material I've heard from it so far is the track "A Halogen Glow" included on the latest Culture Shock compilation cd, and its pretty great... expect a cd Underneath a Statik Sky and an accompanying mini-cd "What's Your Program" soon. Tinman has signed Android Lust, based on the brilliant material you read about last issue... the debut cd Resolution should be out in October. Also out in October on Tinman is the newest Division #9 album Dub'n'Bass: Omen II, Crocodile Shop programmer Mick Hale's d'n'b side project... and hopefully you'll see that long-promised Cydonia album soon... Speaking of CS side-projects, the delayed proGREX.iv album the reInvention opEration was released September 9, on Fifth Colvmn, the disc begins to make it into all Tower locations with FCRs new distribution deal... Crocodile Shop also have another European-only product, a very limited edition live ep that comes free with the first 777 copies of Pain, courtesy of their German label Out of Line. The Aggression have recorded four new tracks with George Hagegeorge (UTN, Urania), for release on their upcoming remix ep "Pure Liquid Ego," due out early '98... Lazarus Effect and their label Black Pumpkin are shopping for another label to license the new LazEff album, preferably a label better suited to marketing an industrial rock band than the punk-oriented BP. New LazEff material is very hard, and very catchy... seems to be moving away from the industrial thing, although the electronics are still there. It seems that PA goth-oriented Advent Sleep will be releasing their debut cd on their own label (appropriately called Self), instead of on the New Creatures' User imprint as expected... standard co-op disagreement is the cause, I guess. Michael Bann of AS did an incredible mix of the Eldritch offending NYC-goth band New Creatures' "Clown Head" that apparently attracted the attention of Cleopatra even though the New Creatures were put off by the "dance" element of the song... I suspect it to get tons of club play, its got the right anthemic feel to it, like Rosetta Stone's "Adrenaline." You'll hear it.
The Bits: Betty's Trash is a project of Trashcan Bangin Culture's King James, and puts a sleazy Thrill Kill Kult bent on some basic industrial backings. It sure seems like they're having fun, and from what I hear the live show lives up to that. Definitely one to watch... the tape "Beauty Sleep" adds an Android Lust remix, which ends up sounding like Android Lust but there's nothing wrong with that, now is there? And there seems to be a forthcoming ep produced by Shikhee. Hmmm... NY based Pain Konsept have gotten quite a boost on the Culture Shock front these days, especially with a few haphazard dates on the Noisex tour and unconfirmed rumors that Velvet Acid Christ's EDT Records label will be releasing PK material... live, well, there wasn't much to look at, but some of the sounds were interesting, and I was told that the backing tapes had been prepared the day before, under some stress, so kudos for the effort... but it seems this should not have been a live band, at least not yet. The tape is similarly half-formed, but the lead track "Lucid Coma" is excellent, and takes that Mentalla lo-fi asthetic and wraps it around some warped EBM beats. Again, I want to hear more. (pepper3680@aol.com) For some reason I've been putting off this tape for what seems like ages, and for no good reason... BioFeedBack, out of Washington DC, put together a decent electro groove and some really nice programming, although it occassionally gets lost in muddy recording (especially the obviously laid-on-top vocals). The George Hagegeorge mix of "Something Less Than Nothing" does not suffer from this, though, and despite the recording flaws I definitely can hear something I'd like to hear more of. Like I said, this tape is pretty old at this point, so hopefully there's something newer. They have a track on a DC-based compilation called "An Ear to an Atmosphere," on Rack and Ruin Records, that fails in any way to represent what I hear on this tape... but which also suffers from some poor recording. The comp otherwise features a variety of poorly recorded semi-electronic artists, veering from straightforward electro and goth bits to bizarre soundsculptures... most of which don't quite manage to grab my attention. Oh them crazy clubs: First, let's just work on what I said last issue... Exedor has already departed Coney island High and is now Saturday nights at the Pyramid, directly competing with the Batcave and Click and Drag. Apparently the NYC club gurus are not smart enough to consider different nights. Cyberflesh was shut down for a few months, or rather City Gardens was shut down for a couple of months, so if you were unfortunate enough to have gone there on one of thse nights, it's okay, you can go back now. The First Saturdays of every month at City Gardens in Trenton, NJ, 21+ to enter. The Haven in Philadelphia WAS doing well, but the building was sold out from under them and the Haven no longer exists. DFC is apparently looking for a new venue for the Haven, but no word yet. And lastly, Vesago's host club the Black Banana also closed, ending the runs of Terrorvision and Vesago there. There have already been other Vesagos (including one in NYC), but it has returned to an irregular, roving schedule. Four for four! The long-standing night at Philly's bank on Wednesdays has more or less moved to the Trocadero, still every Wednesday, now called "Endure" and showcasing Philly's tendency towards old-school EBM and synth pop.
