The next day, we packed up our campsite and hiked through the (abandoned) Keddie resort and up to the maintenance yard.  We waited here for a few hours, listening to the scanner to see if a train would come our way. This picture looks west through the yard.

In the background you can just see the tunnel that leads to the northbound line (as described elsewhere).

The main line is on the left, and if you take it and don't go through the tunnel, you'll pass to the left of the mountain and end up going over the Keddie Wye, on your way westward through the Feather River canyon.

Eventually, we heard a rail inspector coming down the northern line, and there was a Santa Fe train backed up behind him.  So we found a trail that led around the tunnel and over to the northern line.  Guess what we saw there?
