The stained glass window above is the newest addition to the First Baptist Church of Birmingham. Dedicated in 1995 and located by the courtyard, this depicts the movement from brokenness to wholeness. The biblical text of the window is "...your light shall rise from the darkness around you, and your gloom will turn to the brightness of noon... you will arise like a spring whose waters never fail." (Isaiah 58:10b, 11c)
Built in 1928 a distinctive feature of the Gothic architecture is the way in which it employs soaring lines. If you stand at the corner of Maple and Bates and look north toward First Baptist Church, the eye is carried upward to the high vaulting and its beauty. For this reason, Gothic has been described as "stone on its way to heaven".
As the congregation worships each Sunday, they view a window which was dedicated in 1970 and contains the four Gospel Writers -- St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, and St. John, each holding a writing quill. Near the top of the window we see the descending dove of the Holy Spirit -- and a glimpse above the New Jerusalem.
When leaving the sanctuary another window inspires those who worship
to go into the world as did the eleven apostles, whose shields are depicted.
There are four major panels to symbolize four human endeavors: industry,
education, social order, and the arts. At the bottom is a rainbow to remind
us of God's promise to be with us always. This work was dedicated in 1976.
