Augustine and his brothers arrived to Provence and were received with kindness in Aix by its Bishop Protasius and its provinicial governor Airgius.
There were many indications that the missionaries stayed in the illusterious Abbey of Lérins which was very famous at that time. They were welcomed by Abbot Stephen of Lérins.
It was during this visit that they heard about the savage and the barbarity of the Anglo Saxon race. They began to contemplate returning home rather than going to a barbarous, fierce, and unbelieving nation whose language they did not even understand. They all agreed that this was the safer course; so forthwith they sent home Augustine to inform Gregory.
