Mailbag and musings . . . Issue #51, BPAN
Good luck . . .
Heard from Ted Davis (N 4031 Hwy. E, Brodhead WI 53520) in January: ''I also took a trip up to Rochester MN between the hollidays to pick up some Model A engines from Vi Kapler (1033 Forest Hills Dr., SW, Rochester MN 55902). About 15 engines all together. . . . some good, some not so good. I will be selling some of them so pass the word.
''Please put a note in the next newsletter that I sold N29GM and purchased a straight tail Cessna 150 to fly while I work on the Wag-a-bond. Thanks for your helpÑI already miss the Piet!'' George Miller (9112 Pleasant Lane, Ooltewah TN 37363)
Video tapes of the last three Brodheads are available from Kim & Tami Stricker (PO Box 104. Olmsted IL 62970. Send $13.00 to them for a 120 VHS of the '93, '94 and '95 Brodhead Reunions. Or, send them a blank 120 tape and $3.00 return postage. (Those are US domestic prices. You'll have to figure out the postage for non-US destinations.)
Mailing labels are available (for members only) from the BPA. Best bet would be to buy a roster (@ 6 bucks), look at the ZIP sort to determine what range of ZIPs you want for your mailing. We'll print the names and addresses on adhesive labels for five cents per label (minimum order $10.00), and mail them to you. (If you want only the roster's data, it's available free via our World Wide Web site on the InterNet.) gem

Pietenpol wanted (''late model'') by Walter Fuller (PO Box 328, Hayesville NC 28904 - 704-389-8888; or 8339)
Newlywed Bob Dick (1534 Sunset Hill Drive, West Covina CA 91791-2529) emailed us in late December: ... ''Anyhow, point of all this is to pass along some info regarding EXCEL glue. Roger Mann (Rag Wing Aeroplane Co. 312 Gilstrap Drive, Liberty SC 29657 Phone: 803-843-1324; 293-2200) is now stocking it, but it is available through several major home building supply outfits ... It has been around in Europe for a decade and is very well received by the home builders there. Best thing of all it is ONE part ... no mixing. It has a fairly short drying timeÑbut enough to allow your work to be moved/adjusted if necessary. The residue can be easily sanded and it is STRONG. Roger ran some homemade distruct tests and as a result is using it amost exclusivly in place of epoxy. The moisture content (even in kiln dried wood) is what sets it up or cures it ... so, on a seemingly dry wood, the glue will ''soak'' into the pores or grain, searching for the moisture that is there. The result is a deep glue seat and strong adhesion. Another glue of the same basic material is GORILLA glue. If you haven't run across this stuff, you might check with some of the BPA folks. I dug out a bottle of the stuff and wll quote some of the info on the label . . . ready to use...waterproof...gap filling, polyurethane (notice it's polyurEthane..NOT polyurAthane) . . . highly resistant to extreme temperatures and other climatic influences. . . . scrapes or sands easily (it does, too) . . . doesn't leave deep glue spots . . . will accept wood stains more readily than most other adhesives . . . clamp work pieces together within 20 minutes after glue appliction (!!!) . . . clamp time is 4 1/2 hours, depending on atmospheric conditions, wood moisture content should be 8 to 20%, apply in temperatures above 40 degrees F, work time is 20-30 minutes use mineral spirits or otrher thinner for cleanup . . . '' For a dealer near you, contact AmBel Corp, P.O.Box 819 Cottonport Ave., Cottonport, LA 71327 . . . Tel: 318-876-2495 . . . the stuff is made in Belgium, so it can't be all bad . . . ! . . . I know you can't sell products via the newsletter, but this stuff really is doing a fine job for the guys who have used it. One thing they found out quickly was that any glaze on wood (such as the surface finish on some birch ply, etc.) has to be sanded to ''open up the wood'', otherwise the glue cannot migrate into the pores and you get a rotton glue joint. If you give Sammy (at AmBel) a call, tell him I said howdy . . . a really great guy (and, he'll send you a sample of the stuff to use around the house). If you can't find more info, give Roger Mann a call.'' (or send him an SASE with your request for info. and tell him you're with the BPA, Roger's a big Piet fan. . . . gem)

Mailbag and musings . . .
First off - I forgot to put a caption on that picture of 13691 on page 5 of BPAN issue 50. It was taken in 1938. That's Emerson Finke (3763 Simpson Rd. SE Rochester MN 55904) in the flight suit and helmet! Emerson was one of the co-owners of the Cherry Grove Flying Club's airplane. He was at Brodhead in '95.
November 4, 1995 - RR 2, Morell, PEI, Canada Dear Grant, Thanks for putting my Pietenpol story in the newsletter (#49, page 11 . . . gem). I've had some fantastic flights lately. I sent the article on Bernard Pietenpol at the Paul Harvey Ceremony to Lin Richel at the Flying Aces GHQ. I showed the newsletter to some of my model building friends and they were in awe of this tid-bit buried in the newsletter; it's the sort of thing lacking in the popular aviation press. I don't buy any other magazines any more, but I think yours is a good buy. Yes, the enclosed photo of my Pietenpol glider shows some serious deviations in the interest of drag reduction, but is it ever nice to fly! You may be interested to hear that my friend Andrew Jorgensen, designer of the 10 ft. Pietenpol left a cute indoor rubber Pietenpol, semi scale, on my desk at work recently; excellently drawn, and it's a good flyer. When I get it built, will send photos and plans. I wonder if you could prevail upon some Pietenpol owner to PUH-LEEZ make a movie of flying his machine for us. (Chuck Lee, Andrew Jorgensen, Bruce Holbrook, Al Simpson) Keep in touch, Wendell Hughes.
Mon, Nov 20, 1995 20:02 MST, Subj: E-mail list To: GMacLaren, Hi Grant, As a member of BPA and now AOL, I would be interested in the members on line list. Especially interested in those building/flying the GN-1, as that is what I have under construction. Looking forward to making Broadhead for the first time in 96. Just off to a good start on my GN-1, I have 7 wing ribs complete. Great job on the newsletter!!! Wayne Norris (990 Timber Creek Lane, Greenwood, IN 46142) - Wayne (and others): Now that we have a ''Home Page'' on the World Wide Web; (http://users.aol.com/BPANews/www.html) we'll just put the email list there and let ''computer-types'' download the list from there. If you download it, please send me a brief description of yourself for inclusion in future updated lists.
Late November ''Enclosed is a picture of mine and my father's Pietenpols. Mine is the maroon and beige N11MS. My father's is the yellow and blue N123MS. . . . We are organizing the First Annual Southwest Pietenpol gathering for April 27th and 28th, 1996 at the Corona Airport, California. I was wondering if it would be possible to obtain a current membership address list and possibly a small mention in the newsletter regarding the event. We will be handing out trophies for the oldest Pietenpol and the farthest flown. It should be a good time and a great chance to share Pietenpol stories. Sincerely, Scott Liefeld (1832 East Ave. S-4, Palmdale CA 93550 - 805-273-6328) Scott gives us his father's address: Manuel ''Sparkey'' Sparks (10232 Kit Carsen Place, Santee CA 92071 - 619-448-4945) Sparky wrote later, telling us he and Scott plan to fly the two ships to Brodhead '96. Now, that's a ''cross country!''
Rosters and mailing labels (for members only) are available from the BPA. Guess the best bet would be buy a roster, look at the ZIP sort and then determine what range of ZIPs you would want for your mailing. We'll print them on adhesive labels for five cents per label (minimum order $10.00), and mail them to you.
Wed, Nov 22, 1995 9:36 MST From: jboatri@emory.edu To: GMacLaren@aol.com (edited by gem) Grant, It's pleasing to drop by (the Piet web site) when things are too hectic in the lab and I need a break. BTW, reading the mailbag, it appears that several builders got their start or had interest rekindled directly due to rides at Brodhead. Do the Brodhead pilots who hop rides know the impact they're having on the world's population of Pietenpols? Jeff Boatright Jeff - they do now! gem )
A portion of an email exchange on the subject of wood vs. metal gear last November: ''Dear Gary & all BPA'ers, As long as we're voting, I say go for the spruce gear legs! They are a lot of work, but every time you look at them it will be worth the effort. Built correctly, the wood gear can also take incredible stress on poor landings . . . as I can testify to in having dropped FMP's Sky Gypsy in from 3 ft. or so while he was video taping from the front seat. (Yes, it's on video. UGH !) Lots of good reasons for the metal gear tooÑI guess I just see more people around the wood gear Piets. Whatever the choice of gear you choose, we all can agree that your choice of planes is great. Best Regards, Michael Cuy (7720 Center Road, Valley City OH 44280-9520)
Bill Poiry (5306 NSR #590, Oak Harbor, OH 43449) joined in December. He has a Ford-powered 'Camper under construction.
Seems the nice article ''Patrick the Aviator'' by Kim Stricker (PO Box 104, Olmstead IL 62970) showed up in the Chapter 512 (Placerville, CA) newsletter. Chapter member and illustrator/designer Bob O'Hara wrote to Kim, telling him how much he (Bob) enjoyed the piece. Bob has a coloring book for kids that features a nice Air Camper. Bob enclosed a copy of the Piet page, with permission to publish it hereinÑand we will, if the room can be found.
John Lang (1225 S. Riverside Dr., #35, Iowa City IA 52246) joined us in early December. Welcome, John!
Ed Mason (1604 NE 53rd, Portland OR 97213) wrote in December: ''Hi, Grant - Yes, thanks for the newsletters. I'm sure it takes a lot of time and a love of Pietenpols. To keep it easy on you, here is a check for a two-year BPA membership. I purchased a prop and got it, but not in two weeks as promised.'' (it took six weeks . . . gem) ''but it's beautiful . . . laminated birch with mahogany, the light and dark wood combination is stunning. The tips are white and the leading edges have a dark resin protective coatingÑimportant because it's a 72-42 for a Cont. 075. Purchased from Props, Inc, Newport, OR. . . . to my surprise, we have had beautiful weather up to Thanksgiving, including that weekend. Now it's raining and won't stop until June. My new love is housed, spotlessly clean and ready for sunny weather and spring.''
In response to a request for a ''profile,'' to be used in the ''Pietenpol email distribution list'' started by your editor, Denny Finke (4790 West 102 Place, Westminster CO 80030) wrote the following last summer: ''As far as my profile is concerned I'm not sure what all you like to include. I am a Continental DC9 Captain working in CLE. I was with Frontier Airlines out of DEN for 20 years prior to my 9 years at CO. I have always been interested in building a Piet because of knowing Bernard personally since I was a child in Cherry Grove, MN. I have ridden with Bernard and have been involved in his work through my dad, Emerson Finke, and my late Uncle Don Finke. My dad has Piet plans which I would like to use one day to build my own. My son, Kevin, is also a Continental pilot and is interested. Maybe someday he and I could build one together. At any rate we will be following the work of others in the association with great interest. And we hope to return to Brodhead again next year.''
And here's another email from last summer: ''Grant - It's been so long, I thought that I'd let you know what's been going on with my Pietenpol project. In two words, nearly nothing! I didn't get to Brodhead this year because I burned a huge part of my available vacation on a several week flying trip to Alaska in my Mooney with my friend (& BPA member) Don Verdiani. It was an incredible adventure, and produced stories too numerous to mention here. I think I also mentioned that I had gotten sidetracked with the restoration of an old Triumph motorcycle. Well, good news, the Triumph is done and running great. It's entered in a show next week, and I've ridden it a couple of hundred miles already. Of course this is all a lead up to the fact that I've now cleaned up the shop, started ordering airplane materials again, and am totally primed to spend a very productive fall and winter back working on the Piet. Hopefully I can proceed with a minimum of off course excursions! I appreciated your Brodhead updates.'' Jack Broomall (22200 Heatheridge Lane, Northville MI 48167) 71311.2403@compuserve.com
''The Pride of Socorro since 1993'' is the legend on Eddie Sigman's (PO Box 805, Socorro NM 87801-0805) calling card. (See cover of issue #50.)
via email 12/15/95: Grant: Just a short note to say ''I'm Online''!! With our son living in St. Petersburg, Russia and our daughter moving to Dallas we felt this was the best way to stay in touch. The #1 Scout is flying well although not very often in the cold weather. I may make the 73 mile trip to Brodhead for winter storage if I can find a day with a southeast tailwind. No progress on the Aircamper to report. I'm still working on the 1940 Airmaster project. I hope to finish all the precover work by the time we get warm weather. That's assuming our new multi-media computer doesn't capture me!! Would you please send me a list of other Pietenpol onliners. I would especially like to get ''big Jim's'' address. You may give my address out as well. I make the trip to Brodhead for lunch at least weekly. Was there yesterday - there is six inches of snow on the field. Cheers, Gar Williams (9 South 135 Aero Drive, Naperville IL 60564)
December 14, 1995 Dear Grant: Thank you for the prompt and informative letter on the Buckeye Pietenpol Association. Enclosed is my check for membership. I am looking forward to receiving the newsletter. I belong to the Marcellus King EAA Chapter 386 in Austin. Bernard Pietenpol was one of our members. Orrin Hoopman and Vi Kapler are current members. Orrin is presently having health problems. Our club has a large walled off room in a hangar at the local airport. I have moved my wood working equipment out there and as soon as we buy some spruce we will start work. We intend to go with the Corvair engine and the long fuselage. Thanks again, John Biege (802 7th Street NW, Austin. MN 55912) Welcome, John!
Myron Eckel (Rt. 1, Box 198, Eagle Bend MN 56446-9645) signed up his brother-in-law Dean Peterson (RR 1, Box 183 Milaca, MN 56353) in the BPA. Myron says ''I have decided to build a Piet. The motor is at Ron Kelly's in Texas. I don't have the motor yet, but I am impressed with Ron's knowledge.'' Keep us informed, Myron.
Read & Anne Hamilton (191 School Street, Manchester MA 01944) won't be at Brodhead '96 - 'cause Anne's hosting a family reunion at the same time.
Dec 19, 1995 11:24 MST From: MARKS@UIDFM.DFM.UIDAHO.EDU To: GMacLaren@aol.com, Hi Grant, I've been receiving your messages fine for quite some time now and I would like to continue to be on your e-mailing list. I enjoy being able to get information in addition to that in the BPA News. I hope to have my homepage on the Web soon, just a matter of finding the time to do it. I'll have something on Piets there, maybe progress notes and photos . . . nothing to much show as yet on the Piet now though - will do metal fabrication and turning of prop hub and engine crank this winter/spring. I hope to meet you and other Pieters in the not-too-far-off future. Happy Holidays, Mark R. Seman (1404 East ''F'' Street, Moscow ID 83843)
email Fri, Dec 22, 1995 From: (Teal38@aol.com) Scott Dufreche (512 Heneretta Drive, Hurst TX 76054) Grant, I have just got to get a ''Dixie Mag Swich Cover''. I saw them at Broadhead the day I was there, but Frank (Pavliga) did not have any left. I would like to get one of each (single mag and dual mag) could you send me Franks address, phone number or just Email this to him. Thanks Scott. P.S. I've got my tail on the Piet but and still working on the main gear. You guys are doing a great job on the Piet Web pages. Thanks.

.com Grant, Back on line, please note my new E-Mail address. I received BPA # 50 today, good stuff. Glad to see a web page too. No full time job yet, but I'm fairly busy flying a Grumman Gulfstream IV most of the time, in addition to a Canada Challenger and Learjet 55. Got to pay for this online stuff you know. Still thinking ''low and slow'' while I'm a FL450 on the way to some far off place. (G-IV has 10 hour range) Gotta move to a bigger place, perhaps I'll find more time to take action. Happy holidays to all, I'll be in touch, Jon Ross Northport, NY
Thanks to Chap. #604's Prez and ed. Lee Amacker (939 South Third Avenue, Walla Walla WA 99362), we know David Cheney (1720 Gray Lynn Drive, Walla Walla WA 99362) is making progress on his Air Camper ''Tubing has arrived to fabricate and engine mount for the 0-200 plans to install replacing the Corvair presently mounted.'' sez Lee in the 12/95 ''The Rite Flyer.''
Dec 23, 1995 - From: WRNICHOL - Subj: Love your new Web Page . . . Got my December issue today. I noticed your AOL WEB so I am giving it a try, nice work. It is cold here in Utah right now and that has slowed down the gluing in my garage. I am working on the elevators now and then the tail empenage will be finished. For Christmas all I am getting is tools for the plane . . . My wife is slowly buying into the project. I told her it doesn't take much more wood than a couple of coffins. On telling her we could land anyplace in case of problems she said ''yes, like a cemetery.'' We are having fun with it. . . . Thanks for being around . . . Ross & Sandy Nichol (1783 East 8180 South, Sandy UT 84093) (Ross and Sandy were the 50 and 51st BPAers to be added to our ''Piet email distribution list.'' We hear frequently how all this electronic communications is growing. I heard on NPR today that 10% of the US population is ''connected;'' 65% believe they will be by end of 1997. gem)
Bill Doherty (1932 Dyer Avenue, St. Louis MO 63114) died peacefuly in his sleep just before Christmas, 1995. A long-time friend and fellow-Chapter member of Howard Henderson's, Bill was always fun to be around. It was Bill who made the trip to Dayton with Howard and me when Howard and N444MH received the WBA. Bill built N32WD, a ship he called a ''Pietenpol'' but it was more Doherty than Pietenpol. I read our 1990 Issue #29 the night I heard of his death. Good memories.
Dec 25, 1995 From: Teal 38@aol.com Re: Dixie Mag Switch Cover To: GMacLaren - Grant, Thanks for the info. I got my BPA news when I got home the other day. Another great job! I sent Frank an order at the address in the article. I think he will be making a few more than he counted on. They sure do look nice and will give the Piet that old time feel. Scott Dufreche (512 Heneretta Drive, Hurst TX 76054)
New member Leon Olds (11 Sunset Road, Scarboro ME 04074) joined us in December '95. He is building a Piet with 4130 tubing fuselage, wood wings. He's trying to decide on an engine. Anybody up there in New England want to advise? He's 64, a Private Pilot, Young Eagles sponsor, now rents Cesssnas. He's built and flown an ultralight and is a Machinist 1st Class with a shop in his basement. He's an EAA, Vintage Airplane and AOPA member.
Virgil Anderson (120 No. 2nd, Wallingford IA 51365) is a retired parish pastor, continues as a chaplain at a nursing home. He and a partner have a Piet project begun in Texas about ten years ago, they are the 4th owners. They have a Cont. 65 engine mount, are concerned about down thrust and offset. ''Should I give my vertical fin a degree or two to the left to compensate?'' asks Andy.
Dec 27 Fr: MBrusilow@aol.com Subj: online addresses To: GMacLaren@aol.com - Thanks for the addresses. My Piet is in the hangar for the winter - too cold up here to fly open cockpit. Leaving for Fla next week - Lake Worth. Taking the computer with me. I modified the Piet somewhat. Lowered the seat, larger windshield, added a battery, now I have key start. Talk to you later.
''12/24/95 Hi Grant, Enjoyed the last newsletter. Liked the N444MH postcard, too. I canceled my on-line service. Didn't need it. That's why you don't have my email address. After a 12 month hiatus, I got my workshop set up and started building again yesterday. I'm pleased. Siggi starts school in January, Biological Science. She's in Germany for the holidays. I'm spending the holidays working on the house and (now) the Piet. The job's busy, but they are pleased so it's working out. I became the secretary of the local EAA chapter last month. Looking forward to it. That's all our news for now. Kevin Purtee & Siggi Schoen (346 Madison, Frederick MD 21701)
21 Dec 1995 Bart D. Conrad (5111 S Birmingham Pl., Tulsa, OK 74105) Hello Grant, This summer I finished the 30 wing ribs. Thanks to past BPA articles on rib construction it went relatively smoothly. The hardest part was putting up with a hot garage and sticky T-88 glue! I've also gotten a good start on the metal fittings having completed the vertical/horizontal stab fittings except for the hinge fittings. Have decided to make the hinges from square 4130 tubing of two different sizes nested in each other. The elevator, rudder, and aileron horns are ready for welding. A metal cutting blade on my bandsaw made this job go quickly. I used carpet tape to hold the two .032 inch thick plates together while forming. This, along with drilling the two plates at the same time, assured that the two halves were identical. At first I thought that I did not have the skills to shape the control horns but had no problem cold-working them over a piece of wood that had a 1/4 inch radius. To keep the two halves symmetical I secured each horn to the wood forming block with a 3/8 inch bolt. This allowed the two halves to get the same radius and therefore match up for welding. I've also finished the fuselage strut-to-wing fittings. - Will be moving to Pittsburgh, PA in February so Piet production has stopped to make the move. I am a Field Service Representative for Douglas Aircraft Co. out of Long Beach, CA. I am currently supporting American Airlines' MD-80 fleet in Tulsa, OK and am getting transferred to Pitt to support USair's DC-9 and MD-80 fleet. - Had fun and learned lots at Brodhead last July. I got my ride! Have been promised a ride in Jim Ballew's Corvair powered Piet which he recently finished. I guess I'll have to go to Brodhead 96 to get it! - Enclosed is $10.00 for the 1996 newsletter. Keep the technical info coming! ! I'll let you know my new address when I get to PA. Thanks, Bart
We received some very kind words about the BPAN from Don Wainwright (400 SE 349th Place, Washougal WA 98671-9570); he also reports ''The two center sections of our Piets are done. I'm working on the cabanes now. Bill has the engine mounts built. Work is progressing slowly, but we're having fun and learning a lot.''
Leon Olds (11 Sunset Road, Scarboro ME 04074) (see mention earlier herein) says he's read every inch of the past four newsletters and asks ''Does anyone know the weight of a Model ''A'' Ford engine and accessories?'' He tells us he has a Cont. O-200 and is now ''studying weight and balance information.''
John Biege (802 - 7th St., NW, Austin MN 55912) writes ''We are just setting up to start the Pietenpol project. Our room at the airport is large enough to accommodate a 16 ft. table so that is what we will build on. We intend to order our spruce this coming week. Vi Kapler (1033 Forest Hills Dr., SW, Rochester MN 55902) was over this week and spent time with us and hopefully we absorbed enough to get started right. ''We'' are: David DeFor, a minister, Chuck Enger, the County Recorder; and me. I am a retired meat packing superintendent. All three are pilots.
Fred Daddi (717 S. Park Avenue, Audubon PA 19403) wrote at year's end: ''Have drawings for GN-1 . . . thinking about a real Air Camper or a Heath replica from Ragwing Aero.'' Fred says he just got AOL, so he'll soon be on-line.
'94 WBA winner Calvin A. Brown (PO Box 391, Bethlehem NH 03574-0391 - NX429CB- ) told us in January: ''Had a great trip down to the 1st annual Piet fly-in over Labor Day '95 at Hampton NH. Also the first flight of Gary Prices's awesome Pietenpol.''
January 3, 1996 - Grant, Enclosed find another year's dues. I enjoy the Newsletter and all the happenings around the Country with Piet Projects here, there, and everywhere. My current project involves rebuilding a 1927 Buick although I have completed the engine work on a Model 'A' for a sometime Air Camper. I am hoping to see a real live Piet at the Merced, Ca. Anitque Fly In this coming June. Keep up the good work Yancey Juergenson (13348 Orange Blossom Rd., Oakdale CA 95361)
Scott Liefeld (1832 East Ave. S-4, Palmdaele CA 93550) says ''I'll se ya at Brodhead '96! (I've heard that Scott and another ship will be flying from CA to B'head - now, that's a trip! ... gem)
William Karr (519 Hamilton Ave., Pasadena CA 91106) has fuselage and tail feathers done. Says '' . . . Easier than my old ''Corban Super Ace. Looking forward to the meet in Corona in April.''
Lauren Williams (12 N. Napa, Petaluma CA 94954-1331) says he's ''building a 155% Air Camper powered by a 300 CID Ford out of an F-150 truck.'' Completion planned by Wright Bros. flight anniversary - Dec. 17, 2003. Has wing ribs, tail feathers and a cockpit mock-up completed.
Willard D. ''Bill'' Rood (5664 Kelekent SE, Kentwood MI 49508) hasn't started yet, will visit and help his brother in NY with (non-Piet) projects; visit Sun 'n Fun.
Danny L. Grayless (13919 Berg Rd., Orfordville, WI 53576) recently purchased plans - intend to use Corvair power.
